The custom items are where this position will be supporting. By catering to the diverse needs of the campus, the store supports educational pursuits and promotes a sense of belonging with all members of the University community.Working as a Store Merchandise Buyer for the U of A BookstoreAre you ready to make a huge impact in the vibrant world of campus retail? As a Store Merchandise Buyer, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring our store thrives by working directly with campus decision-makers to advance our promotional product business. In this role, you’ll be a key player in building and nurturing relationships with new and existing customers. From identifying community prospects to participating in networking events, you’ll grow the business while ensuring orders exceed their expectations and meet university brand standards.Your responsibilities will include preparing quotes, negotiating prices, and closing sales, all while maintaining seamless effective communication with vendors and customers.Duties

  • Promotional Product Sales:
  • Identify, initiate, and improve customer relationships for promotional product sales
  • Communicate achievements and issues to the customers while resolving any issues with their orders
  • Prepare quotes, negotiate prices, and close sales, ensuring all orders meet university brand standards
  • Vendor Relations:
  • Meet with existing vendor representatives to negotiate unit prices and obtain information on new product lines
  • Identify and research new vendors to enhance product offerings
  • Brand Compliance and Customization Programs:
  • Work with the University of Alberta Brand team to uphold the highest brand standards
  • Inventory Management:
  • Monitor, create, and scrutinize purchase orders
  • Optimize shipping schedules to lower overall costs

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma required
  • An equivalent combination of education and/or experience will be considered
  • Two (2) years or more of experience working in a retail setting, with accountability for achieving sales/margin goals and targets, gaining purchasing and/or merchandising experience and providing customer service
  • Two (2) years or more of experience working in a retail/sales setting with accountability in providing customer service, including, but not limited to timely communication, proactive problem solving and conflict resolution
  • Self-motivated, creative, entrepreneurial and comfortable working on multiple concurrent projects in a busy, student-and market-oriented educational environment.
  • Demonstrated cultural sensitivity including the ability to appreciate diversity with an understanding of differences and similarities among cultural groups.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and G-suite applications
  • Less than 18 months to be competent in the role after working through one cycle of each event held in the store.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Experience researching, developing and launching new product lines is an asset
  • Oracle Netsuite experience would be a large asset
  • Experience in Supply Chain & Replenishment knowledge with core replenishment experience
