Job description

Food Services operates two cafeterias and Campus Caterers and works closely with Culinary Arts, Professional Baking, and Hospitality Management to provide food services to the campus community. Food Services is part of the Ancillary Services team.Duties:We are hiring a full-time Manager to join our team in Food Services at Vancouver Island University. This position reports to the Director Ancillary Services and works with Food Service Supervisors, Leads Coordinators and Staff to oversee the day-to-day operation(s) of two cafeterias and catering at the Nanaimo Campus. Manager Food Services Operations is responsible for providing leadership to the Food Services Team while engaging in strategic planning, organizing, directing, controlling expenses, and the ongoing evaluation of operations.Key Responsibilities:

  • Implement procedures and practices that assist in the advancement of food service operations including Catering
  • Research and implement strategies to improve operational efficiency through inventory control, process improvement and system implementation.
  • Delegation and development of the Food Services supervisors and Catering coordinator’s positions
  • Oversees staff scheduling, daily labour tracking and reporting to Director Ancillary Services
  • Works in conjunction with Culinary Chair on culinary requirements for cafeteria operations
  • Responsible for inventory controls, food, labour and direct costs
  • Ensures quality, courteous service is provided to all customers including proper and accurate signage displayed for all items served
  • Works with Human Resources to manage all hiring, staffing, labour, progressive discipline, accommodation, training and administration of Food Services and HR procedures
  • Liaison with the Marketing and Communications to launch marketing initiatives and promotions
  • Ensure compliance with VIU policies and procedures including Health and Safety programs
  • Oversees the routine and unscheduled maintenance and repairs required within Food Services

Required Qualifications:Bachelor’s degree in related field such as Business Administration, Commerce, Management or Hospitality. Minimum 5 years of progressively responsible operational experience, including management of employees. A combination of experience and education may be considered.

  • Demonstrated ability to be organized, detail and process orientated.
  • Knowledge of inventory management including inventory and menu costing
  • Effective communication skills
  • Ability to analyze and interpret financial data.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule- will involve some evenings and weekends
  • Current Food Safe Certification
  • Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s license with a confirmed satisfactory driving record
  • Ability to complete and successfully pass a criminal background check
  • Physical ability to perform the requirement of the position including daily travel between multiple buildings on campus and occasional lifting of up to 20 lbs.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience managing in unionized environments
  • Experience in the installation and maintenance of computerized inventory control and point-of-sale systems
