  • Progressing through the Systematic Approach to Training (SAT) based training program safely and on-schedule.
  • Identifying opportunities to obtain training and experience, ensuring work schedule flexibility to observe or participate in facility operations as they occur.
  • Exhibiting self-motivation to learn fundamentals quickly as a basis to learn more complex facility operations.
  • Facilitating operations and identifying and responding to abnormal operating conditions.
  • Nuclear Operator Trainee (NOT) will be given the necessary skills to perform normal operations and the knowledge to participate in problem solving. Should deviations from normal operating conditions be observed, the NOT/NO2 will be trained to shut systems down to a safe state, following the principle of Conservative Decision Making, in accordance with procedure. Troubleshooting will be conducted under the guidance of an Operations Specialist or the Operations Supervisor.
  • Completing any and all required company training needed to obtain qualification to perform work in the facility in a timely manner and ensure training requirements are kept up to date.
  • Performing any and all administrative tasks (e.g., time accounting, leave use, bioassay, etc.) in a timely manner.
  • Conducting oneself in a manner that reflects operations in a Class 1B Nuclear Facility, that is ethical, accountable, and professional. Compliance with the code of conduct is an expectation, as is respectful interactions with any staff members and visitors.
  • Understanding and rigorously using human error reduction tools (e.g., ‘Focus on Four’) to reduce the probability and severity of errors resulting from human performance.
  • Using the Corrective Action Program (ImpAct) to identify issues or trends.
  • Other duties as assigned by your manager.

What we are looking for:

  • Education
  • An Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) with credits in Mathematics (MCB4U), Chemistry (SCH3U), Physics (SPH3U) and English (ENG4U). OR,
  • A minimum of Ontario Grade 12 advanced level plus four (4) Ontario Academic Credits (OAC) in Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, and English. OR,
  • The equivalent in education and experience to the above requirements.
  • Experience
  • 1-5 years’ experience in a nuclear operations environment, plant operations/production experience is considered an asset
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Ability to read/understand all types of technical drawings is strongly preferred.
  • Understand, interpret and carry out written instructions.
  • Use dexterity in the handling of tools and equipment.
  • Have knowledge of pipefitting, carpentry, millwright rigging, instruments, electrical panel boards, and chemical and radiation protection.
  • Possess good computer skills including working knowledge of MS Office software.
  • Function as part of a team dedicated to a quality operation in a customer-oriented environment, to possess a positive attitude towards the job and take the initiative for self-directed study.
  • Effectively communicate with supervision, peers, trainees, and customers and have the ability to work well with other employees to complete work safely, efficiently and effectively.
  • Reliable, observant, and safety-conscious.
  • Capable of working a shift schedule appropriate to the requirements of the facility, and wear appropriate protective clothing and equipment when required.
  • Knowledge of As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA) principles.
  • Have a willingness to attend further radiation protection training as a Group 3 and Group 2 employee.
  • Security Clearance Eligibility Required
  • Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3-5 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat’s “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security.”

Working Conditions:

  • Capable of working a shift schedule appropriate to the requirements of the facility, and wear appropriate protective clothing and equipment when required.
  • The position reports directly to the Facility Supervisor and has normal working hours between 1800h Sunday and 1800h Friday, 24 hours a day. The operators are divided into four operating shifts. “A” shift to “C” shift work a 12-hour continuous rotation. “D” shift is a steady day shift working between 0815 hours and 1625 hours Mondays to Friday.
  • The position includes working in a number of indoor and outdoor environments ranging from control room/office work to field work in conditions ranging from outdoor climate to cramped areas where industrial and radiological conditions exist.
