Senior Manager, Data Engineering (Self-Service BI Applications)

As the Senior Manager, Software Data Engineering responsible for building and supporting a team focused on Self-Service BI applications, you will lead a group of engineers in developing robust, scalable, and user-friendly BI platforms that enable business users to perform their own data exploration and reporting. You will oversee the end-to-end design, development, and delivery of self-service BI solutions that provide accurate and timely insights, empowering stakeholders across Expedia Group.  Your role will focus on creating data environments that prioritize accessibility, speed, and ease of use while ensuring the underlying data infrastructure is reliable, secure, and efficient.

What you will do:

  • Team Leadership & Development: Build, lead, and mentor a high-performing team of software data engineers dedicated to creating and maintaining self-service BI applications. Providing technical guidance and career development for team members.

  • Architect & Build BI Platforms: Oversee the design and implementation of self-service BI platforms, ensuring they are intuitive, performant, and scalable. Partner with analytics data engineers, BI Developers and product teams to design systems that allow business users to easily access, manipulate, and visualize data.

  • Data Infrastructure & Pipelines: Lead the development of scalable, automated data pipelines to support BI applications. 

  • Stakeholder Engagement: Collaborate with cross-functional teams including analysts, product managers and program managers to gather requirements, ensure alignment with business needs, and deliver BI solutions that drive decision-making across Expedia

  • Data Governance & Security: Implement and enforce best practices for data governance, security, and access management within self-service BI environments. Ensure that sensitive data is protected and that users have access only to the data relevant to their needs.

  • Performance Optimization: Continuously monitor, optimize, and improve the performance of self-service BI platforms. Identify bottlenecks and proactively resolve issues to ensure fast, reliable access to data for end-users.

  • Technology Evaluation & Innovation: Stay current with the latest trends in BI tools, software data engineering, and analytics technologies. Evaluate and recommend new tools or processes that improve the efficiency, scalability, and usability of the BI platforms.

  • Data Democratization: Lead initiatives to empower business users with data by creating user-friendly tools, documentation, and training that allow them to create their own reports and visualizations, minimizing the need for technical intervention.

  • Project Management: Manage the end-to-end lifecycle of BI projects alongside program management, from planning to execution and deployment. 

  • Metrics & Monitoring: Establish performance and success metrics for the self-service BI initiatives. Implement monitoring systems to ensure the health and performance of the data infrastructure and BI tools

Who you are 

  • Proven experience managing and growing engineering teams, including performance management and mentorship

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, related technical discipline; or equivalent related professional experience

  • 8+ years of experience in Software engineering

  • 3+ years of experience in managing high-performance data engineering, and Backend/Front end Engineering team with a focus on building data platforms and BI applications

  • Strong expertise in data warehousing, data modelling, ETL/ELT processes, and pipeline orchestration

  • Hands-on experience with BI platforms (e.g. Tableau, Looker, Superset, PowerBI) and data transformation tools (e.g., dbt, Airflow)

  • Proficiency in cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and cloud-native data services (e.g., Trino, Snowflake, StarRocks, Redshift)

  • Strong knowledge of Java, Kotlin or Javascript

  • Strong knowledge of API development, RESTful APIs, GraphQL

  • Expertise in SQL, Python, or other programming languages related to data engineering

  • Deep understanding of data governance, data security, and compliance best practices

  • Experience with Agile methodologies and project management frameworks

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate with technical and non-technical stakeholders
