English Conversation Volunteers

Want to make a big difference in the world, even with just an hour or two per week and without leaving home?

Fluent English speakers with a heart for encouragement, and confidence using video conferencing, are welcome to join the volunteer team at MissionAssist.

Service Description

Around the world many mission workers benefit from talking in English which enables them to participate in international meetings, training sessions and conferences.

MissionAssist provides a service offering them regular conversation practice with fluent English speakers. By using day-to-day vocabulary in a friendly, topic-centred conversation, gospel workers can increase their confidence and fluency in English as a further language.

Volunteer Description

You can get involved wherever you live, using your time and goodwill to serve others. You can choose how many hours to serve and when, so your volunteering can be flexible and fitted in around other commitments. Once you have agreed to partner with a learner, you would liaise with the client and arrange video conference sessions at a mutually convenient time. You need to speak English fluently and clearly. Regional accents are welcome.

Overall Responsibility

To contribute to the English conversation practice service provided by MissionAssist serving world mission from home.

Key Tasks

• Organise and host conversation practice sessions, usually using a video conferencing tool such as Zoom, Skype or WhatsApp.
• Keep in contact with the service coordinator, to support their role which includes matching volunteers to English learners.

Required Skills or Abilities

• Fluent English speaker.
• Enjoy turn-taking conversation.
• Ability to give positive, helpful feedback.
• Confidence organising and hosting video conference meetings.
