Similar roles are likely to become available in the future in Glasgow, London, Manchester and York.Full time 35 hours per week, plus the option for hybrid working.Salary: £43,588 to £50,018You will be responsible for both assessments and the engineering development of projects including but not limited to footbridges, underline bridges, overline bridges, stations and ancillary civil structures. This ranges from clarification of remits to project completion so that engineering solutions are developed to best satisfy the business case.About the role (External)Engineering Services is a function within Route Services. We sit as a central team to provide national skills and activities which enable regions and industry partners to deliver railway schemes for our customers.As a large multi-discipline team which focuses on engineering delivery, we have many roles from pure engineering to project management and we touch every part of the railway from track, power, signalling and structures, to the lifts and escalators which are essential to keep our stations moving.Being multi-disciplinary means we have great opportunities to work in design, development or even delivery of activities such as our own points operating equipment which move trains from one track to another up to 125mph.We are recruiting for a specific role within the team, and we need two enthusiastic, motivated and inspiring individuals to join us.What you can expect from the leadership within Engineering Services“I am a firm believer in creating the right environment, providing the right tools and instilling trust in our people to deliver the best they can for themselves and for the team.   • Work collaboratively with clients to review and challenge project remits to ensure there is a clear scope of works for the design of an engineering project.
  • Develop and support engineering and development activities so that they result in schemes that are affordable and meet programme requirements in a safe and environmentally responsible manner for time, cost and quality. Manage the development of suitable engineering options for a proposal so that full consideration is given to safety, reliability, operational capacity modelling, maintainability, ease of construction, and environmental/whole life issues. Engineering excellence is to be supported by:
  • Fulfilling the role of Contractors Responsible Engineer (CRE) or be working towards this under mentorship. This is subject to competence assessment, and authority to work at the appropriate level.
  • Secure all relevant base data.
  • Review compliance with appropriate standards.
  • Using feedback from all relevant past projects across the UK rail network, lessons learned etc.
  • Keep competencies up to date via training, briefings, CPD, etc.
  • Maintain strict change control on scope development; evaluate cost, time and performance impacts in conjunction with development management.
  • Lead or participate in the development of concepts for pre PACE and feasibility studies.
  • Lead or participate in the design of options for further development. Prepare or monitor preparation of reports, papers etc. as necessary.
  • Lead or participate in the design development of the selected single option.
  • Undertake, check and approve detailed design activities, including forms, reports and calculations, during PACE ES5.
  • Work collaboratively with the Designated Project Engineer (DPE), Project Engineers (PE) and other CREs in a multidisciplinary environment.
  • Undertake structural assessments, including bridges, up to levels 0.5 to 2.
  • Review the impact of projects against the 9 protected characteristics as detailed in the Equality Act 2010 through the completion of Diversity Impact Assessments.
  • Adhere to the Network Rail Environmental standards for designs.
  • Manage all engineering and development activities so that they result in schemes that are affordable, and meet programme requirements in a safe and environmentally responsible manner for time, cost and quality.
  • Support the Construction Design Management (CDM) Principal Designer during PACE stages 1 and 2 in all associated duties and carry out or monitor cross-discipline engineering checks of all relevant aspects of the proposal.
  • Manage the engineering interfaces of allocated proposals with concurrent work in other disciplines, or within other programmes.
  • Act as or liaise with the appropriate Project Engineer during different design stages.
  • Engage, work collaboratively with, monitor and assist in evaluating external Consultants and Contractors where required.
  • To undertake occasional site visits for survey purposes as per requirements of workload.

The Ideal Candidate should have all the essential criteria below· An engineering degree or equivalent industry-recognised training qualification.· A demonstrable aptitude for option development.· Strong evaluation and decision-making skills.· A working knowledge of rail engineering; relevant successful experience working in the principal discipline and an adequate understanding of all other related disciplines.· An ability to work and communicate effectively in a team context.· An appreciation of all the lifecycle stages of rail infrastructure.· CDM, Risk assessment and external audit competency.· A minimum of three years’ experience of bridge design or assessment.· Membership of a relevant engineering professional institution (e.g. ICE or IStructE).Desirable but not essential· Experience in modelling and analysis software packages such as Lusas, Midas Civil etc.· Chartered or near to Chartered Membership of a relevant engineering professional institution (e.g. ICE or IStructE).· Experience in design, installation and maintenance.For full details of what you’ll be doing and the skills and experience you’ll need, please see the attached job description.How to apply (External)Closing date: 31st January 2025 – Late applications will not be accepted.To submit your application, click apply now.
