The Carbon Pricing Senior Associate will be based in Amman, Jordan and will support the implementation of the Jordan Readiness project activities as well as support the identification and design of a cooperative approach between Jordan and Norway. The successful candidate will report to the GGGI Carbon Pricing project manager.

The position-holder will provide day-to-day technical support, as well as liaise externally to ensure impactful delivery of the project and its outputs, with the guidance from the project manager.

Prior knowledge and/or experience in carbon markets is preferable, as the position-holder will be required to quickly absorb and apply sufficient technical knowledge on Article 6 concepts, requirements, frameworks and approaches to the local context in Jordan.

  •  Support the implementation of the GGGI Jordan carbon activities in close coordination with the Country Team (based in Amman), the Carbon Pricing Unit (based in Seoul) and relevant government and private sector project stakeholders.
  • Supervise and manage ad hoc consultants, and implementation partners.
  • Maintain high-quality project management, and ensure effective, timely and efficient delivery of project results and activities in the field.
  • Provide high-quality technical inputs and advisory on issues related to Article 6 readiness and the scoping and preparation of possible mitigation activities in Jordan.

Engagement:

  • Work closely with GGGI Carbon Pricing Unit and the project manager to understand the local context, including GGGI’s role in Jordan; to ensure timely and high-quality delivery of the project; and to develop technical knowledge of Article 6 requirements, frameworks and approaches.
  • Develop and foster strong relationships with key government stakeholders, facilitating the day-to-day communication with the Ministry of Environment and other key stakeholders in Jordan.
  • Work closely with government partners and private sector in implementing the project, recognizing the importance of government buy-in and ownership.
  • Coordinate with other development finance institutions and partners supporting engagement with international carbon markets in Jordan and ensure visibility of the Jordan Article 6 Readiness Project and Jordan’s cooperation with the NACA Fund.
  • Maintain active flexibility through professional relations with key stakeholders to capture and integrate their changing needs and manage expectations.

Delivery:

  • Support the delivery of high-quality project outputs on time and within budget that meet program objectives, donor requirements and government requirements.
  • Quickly absorb and apply sufficient technical knowledge on Article 6 concepts, requirements, frameworks and approaches.
  • Contrinbute to quality monitoring and evaluation, timely submission of donor reports and deliverables.
  • Contribute to deliver capacity building events that introduce key Article 6 concepts and options to key government and other stakeholders.
  • Support the design of governance frameworks in Jordan that meet Article 6 requirements and are relevant to the Jordann institutional context.
  • Contribute to the identification of priority sectors and mitigation activities for Article 6, in collaboration with the Government of Jordan and private sector.
  •  Help develop Mitigation Activity Idea Notes (MAINs) for up to 3 mitigation activities.
  • Provide support to the implementation of Jordan’s cooperation with the NACA Fund
  • Support bilateral engagement between Government of Jordan and the Norwegian Government, as well as other potential countries and cooperation partners.
  • Support the process of facilitating key agreements between government, private sector and other international partners.
  • Support the planning and facilitation of key project workshops and meetings with key stakeholders in Jordan.
  • Contribute to reporting on project delivery as required by the Article 6 Readiness Facility Committee.

Requirements:

Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering, energy, economics or policy, development, or other related disciplines related to green growth, sustainable development in energy or climate change. Master’s degree is a plus .
  • 4 to 5 years of professional experience with a public or private sector entity in fields of climate change or international development.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop presentations, reports and other documentation of a very high standard.
  • Knowledge of carbon markets, climate change issues, and the Paris Agreement is an asset.
  • Fluency in English and Arabic is required.
