This pioneering industry partnership will deliver a major transformation through the deployment of digital train control technology known as the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS). This represents a migration to a safer, higher performing, more resilient, more efficient, better skilled, more productive, and greener railway, delivering passenger benefits in the areas of safety, punctuality and resilience, and taxpayer benefits in the areas of reduction in capital and whole life cost.At the forefront of this mission is the delivery of the East Coast Digital Programme, which is the first intercity railway to migrate to digital signalling and is the third phase of the digital railway masterplan.IPDR is leading the Train Control System Framework (TCSF) contract for the UK network, working with various suppliers and various stakeholders (System Authority, Technical Authority, TOC’s & FOC’s) to develop industry leading digital technology fit for a 21st century railway.You’ll work on groundbreaking projects that make a real-world impact. This hybrid role offers a balance of regular in-office collaboration with remote work, encouraging flexibility while enabling you to work closely with our diverse team.At GBRX, we are driving innovation in the railway industry, delivering complex projects that shape the future of transportation.Brief DescriptionWe are recruiting for a Senior Project Engineer for Industry Partnership for Digital Railway. To support the development, design and construction activities across a portfolio of projects and initiatives..To help achieve the industry’s strategic objectives, we require an innovative thinker and problem solver with European Train Control System (ETCS) experience or understanding to support further ETCS development and deployment within GB. The role will support a number of projects and workstreams within the context of the wider network ETCS portfolio.About the role (External)Key Accountabilities:

  • Implement Network Rail systems and procedures to maintain a cost effective, high quality, safe and environmentally responsible approach to design, construction, commissioning and other technical activities on relevant projects, compliant with all relevant legislation. Liaise with regulators and others as appropriate.
  • Engineer Projects to the standards and specification of Network Rail, allocated design and construction contracts include reference to and are compliant with appropriate Railway Group and Network Rail Company standards, formal specifications and procedures.
  • Manage all engineering activities so that they result in schemes that are affordable and meet programme requirements in a safe and environmentally responsible manner for time, cost and quality.
  • Maintain the use of relevant techniques and procedures of quantified and qualitative risk assessment and HAZOP analysis to allocated projects and manage the environmental aspects of allocated projects in accordance with Network Rail’s environmental policy.
  • Monitor design and specialist consultants and contractors.
  • Provide project management advice in respect of all construction activities, including testing and commissioning and site supervision. Manage the design and/or construction elements of relevant projects meet the requirements of current legislation, including construction design management (CDM) regulations.
  • Internal and contractor’s design/construction/specialist personnel are competent.
  • Undertake reviews of design and/or construction activities. Arrange audits of contractors monitoring safety, environment and quality of design, construction, testing and commissioning and management systems is adequate.
  • Carry out the duties of designated project engineer (DPE) for specific projects.
  • Identify and share best practice across the various project teams.

Essential:

  • Successful relevant experience in signalling engineering, ideally with involvement in construction and design projects across multi discipline areas.
  • Technical qualifications to HNC/HND or equivalent GNVQ level.
  • Knowledge of quality assurance.
  • An understanding of the arrangements required for the independent assessment of work.
  • CDM, risk assessment, engineering management competency

Desirable:

  • Membership of a relevant professional body with chartered status and/or educated to degree level.
  • Knowledge of structuring safety cases in support of projects.
  • An appreciation of environmental issues in engineering works.
  • Project safety management experience
  • CSM RA.
