Your experience and perspective will help Emera to safely deliver cleaner, reliable energy to our customers.Reporting to the Operations Manager, we are currently looking for a Fuel Handler to join our Operations team at Brooklyn Power on a full time, basis for a 12-month contract. Brooklyn Power is a biomass-wood fired power plant, consisting of a 30 MW turbine/generator and a 330,000 lb/hr fluidizer bed boiler.Located in Brooklyn (Queens County) Nova Scotia, Brooklyn Power is a part of Emera Energy, a well-established and growing energy marketing and trading company in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Emera Energy is a wholly owned subsidiary of Emera Inc. and is a premier energy marketing company. Emera Energy buys and sells energy commodities and provides related energy management services to customers throughout Eastern Canada and the Northeastern United States.As Fuel Handler, you will:

  • Operate mobile equipment to supply fuel to the plant and manage fuel pile inventory in a safe manner.
  • Ensure fuel receiving and reclaiming is functioning in a safe and efficient manner;
  • Monitor fuel receiving and reclaiming operations to determine the need for and timing of manual intervention and corrective action. Assist drivers of trucks delivering solid fuel as required;
  • Implement and carry out plant policies and procedures to ensure acceptable housekeeping, cleanliness and orderliness;
  • Assist plant operations in ensuring availability of the boiler, and fuel feed systems as directed by the Shift Engineer;
  • Monitor plant grounds and alert the Shift Engineer of any abnormal conditions external to the plant. Ensure all safety, environmental and security problem situations are identified to the Shift Engineer immediately. Take corrective action as requested by the Shift Engineer;
  • Assist plant maintenance personnel as required to ensure plant availability;
  • Perform preventive maintenance activities as directed by plant management;
  • Operate and maintain all fuel yard mobile equipment in a safe and efficient manner. Complete all pre-operating checks and inspections and report any problems to the Operations Manager or the Maintenance Manager;
  • Assist outside contractors with maintenance on mobile equipment as required.
  • Assist with Activities during plant shutdowns and participate in safety and improvement initiatives.
  • Perform other duties as directed by the operations manager.

This position is considered a safety sensitive position. As such, the successful candidate must comply with the Emera Alcohol and Drug Policy which requires a confidential pre-employment alcohol and drug test in accordance with the Emera Energy Alcohol and Drug Procedure.These following skills will make you successful:

  • A 4th class Power Engineers Certificate is preferred;
  • Heavy equipment training/certification is preferred;
  • Heavy equipment experience is an asset i.e. Caterpillar D8T bulldozer, Komatsu D155AX bulldozer, or Caterpillar 950 loader;
  • Ability to function effectively in a team environment;
  • Must be able to work Shift work and flexible to perform work for both the operations as well as the maintenance department;
  • Occasional after hour and emergency plant work may be required;
  • Ability to perform break-in required maintenance during off hours when regular maintenance staff are not on site;
  • This is a physically demanding position and, as such, candidates must be capable of performing this type of work on occasion, including climbing ladders and stairs, and working at heights (e.g. on conveyor catwalks).
