As a member of SaskPower’s management team, this position is responsible for assisting with and/or preparing technical studies, business cases, detailed designs, technical specifications, procurement evaluations and engineering drawings for capital projects of existing and new power plants, including Small Modular Reactor (SMR). This position will also prepare project plans, cost estimates, and schedules and provide contract management and project coordination services, ensuring alignment with departmental and corporate strategic goals and objectives.KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Learn and become familiar with assigned technical tasks, methodologies, and practices
  • Support the mechanical design oversight for the standard and site-specific design for the SMR project
  • Manage contracted external design services and, where required, external oversight services for the SMR project
  • Make decisions on the quality and safety of the design for the SMR project
  • Develop detailed designs, evaluation criteria, technical specifications, guidelines, standards and new practices based upon codes, technologies and methodologies.
  • Manage scope, schedule, cost, risk and stakeholder relationships for all assigned contracts and projects.
  • Provide technical assistance and direction for construction, commissioning and operations activities.
  • Perform technical and economic analysis of alternative solutions for project business cases and make recommendations on courses of action.
  • Prepare project plans, estimates, budget forecasts, schedules and risk registries and initiate corrective action as appropriate.
  • Provide direction to Engineers-In-Training, technologists, technicians and management staff.
  • Provide direction and input to consultants and other external technical agencies as required.
  • Other related duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering in Mechanical
  • Professional Engineering Designation – P. Eng. and relevant experience in a combination of the following engineering tasks: planning facilities, providing design, construction, operations, commissioning, contract management and coordination of projects
  • Demonstrated experience in mechanical design and equipment specification working with industrial or power generation facilities/equipment (i.e. turbines, pumps, fans, material handling and conveying equipment, heat exchangers, piping, pressure vessels, HVAC systems, ducting and expansion joints, fire protection systems, etc.),
  • Experience working for nuclear based power generation facilities would be considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of relevant design codes and standards related to mechanical engineering, equipment and systems (i.e. Saskatchewan Boiler & Pressure Vessel Act & Regulations, ASME B31.1, B31.3 and Section VIII, ASTM, API, CSA, NBIC, NFPA, ASHRAE, etc.).
  • Project management experience including the development of scopes of work, cost estimates, project schedules, procurement documents, bidding evaluations and contract negotiation.
  • Results oriented thinker, with the ability to manage and provide advice regarding complex and confidential issues with sensitivity and professionalism.
  • Ability to work and manage in a multi-discipline engineering environment.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, facilitation, project management and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to foster a culture focused on safety, innovation, and teamwork.
  • Ability to mentor, coach, and support Engineers-In-Training
  • Demonstrated skill in SaskPower’s Competencies
  • Must have a continuing record of professional development
