Please see below for a detailed job description for the role.Main duties of the jobWe are looking for an HCPC registered dietitian with significant experience of working in adult gastroenterology to join our gastroenterology dietetic service based at Southampton General Hospital. The post holder will provide clinical cover to complex gastroenterology inpatients and outpatients. Working with this complex group of patients will require extensive liaison with the wider multidisciplinary team. You will work with the gastroenterology dietetic team lead to develop this specialist service. The gastroenterology dietetic team comprises of 7 dietitians working within the wider acute adult dietetic team. We are a busy, hardworking team known for its friendliness, support and development opportunities. As a member of the multidisciplinary team you will participate in regular CPD sessions and MDT education meetings. UHS is a regional centre for gastroenterology, with an active research programme linked to the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre. The department of dietetics and speech and language therapy employs approximately 130 staff, with clinical experts working across the range of specialties, providing both acute and community services in adults and paediatrics. Our service operates Monday to Friday What youll do You will: Be responsible for providing a dietetic service to adult gastroenterology inpatients, with a focus on patients with functional gastrointestinal disorders and eating disorders. Provide complex nutritional assessment and support to gastroenterology patients including oral and enteral nutrition support and liaison with the nutrition support team in provision of parenteral nutrition. Provide a clinical service to general gastroenterology inpatients and outpatients and clinical mentorship to band 6 gastroenterology dietitians. Work in a variety of clinical settings including acute medical wards and outpatient clinics. Be a key member of the multidisciplinary team working closely with the medical team, specialist nurses, physiotherapists, pharmacists, psychologists and social workers. You will also be required to liaise closely with teams at other hospitals. Work with the team lead gastroenterology dietitian to develop the service to inpatients with functional gastrointestinal disorders and eating disorders. Provide educational talks on the importance of nutrition in gastroenterology to inform patients, nurses, doctors and students. Continued professional development is actively encouraged, there will be the opportunity to be involved in service development and regular audit. Be involved with the supervision and support of junior dietitians and dietetic assistants as well as student training placements. What were looking for We are looking for someone who has a keen interest in nutrition in gastroenterology, with evidence of relevant, strong clinical skills. Experience of working with gastroenterology patients is essential. Flexibility, ability to prioritise and manage a busy, complex caseload is important. You must have excellent communication skills as well as an empathic nature to help patients manage their condition and be aware of the psychological impact this may have. You will be organised and well-motivated, demonstrating an ability to act as a senior member of a multidisciplinary team.
