Assistant Magazine EditorLocation: New Scientist Headquarters – LondonPosition: PermanentWorkplace Type: Hybrid/3 days per week in office at the following address: 9 Derry Street, Kensington, London, W8 5HYJob IntroductionThis position forms part of a new team that will curate New Scientist magazine each week. Reporting to the magazine editor, the assistant magazine editor will help to ensure the much-loved magazine gets the attention it needs, and its readers get the premium product they expect and enjoy, as we migrate to a digital-first approach to commissioning content.They will work closely with the magazine editor to help choose content that will appeal to magazine readers, and the art and subbing teams to ensure pages and page furniture are eye-catching and accurate. They will also oversee any magazine-first pages as required.Main Responsibilities

  • Support the magazine editor as they curate the magazine each week
  • Help with creating an editorial flat plan
  • Flow copy from online into the magazine software
  • Cut stories to fit and edit intros where necessary
  • Write headlines, standfirsts, picture captions and other page furniture as needed
  • Work with design and pictures to ensure layouts are visually appealing
  • Oversee magazine-first pages, as required
  • Commission magazine-first stories, as required
  • Ensure that all production deadlines are met
  • Deputise for the magazine editor in their absence, if needed
  • Adapt and take on responsibilities as the role requires

Person SpecificationKnowledge & Experience

  • Editing or subediting experience (ideally for a national or international news organisation)
  • Excellent editorial judgement
  • Understanding of science and technology, and a passionate interest in both
  • Understanding of different journalistic voices for different types of stories – such as news, reviews and features – and be confident working with them
  • A degree in science or technology, ideally
  • Interest in print products, particularly magazines
  • Knowledge of WordPress, InCopy, InDesign and Microsoft Word, ideally
  • Understanding of New Scientist market and a good understanding of magazine reader requirements.
