Department: Environmental Design and Rural DevelopmentPosition Description:AD24-35The School of Environmental Design and Rural Development (SEDRD) at the University of Guelph invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level.SEDRD is actively involved in Canadian and international landscape architecture, planning and capacity development. Considered the birthplace of landscape architecture education in Canada, 60 years ago, the University of Guelph has an established an international reputation offering two of Canada’s leading and enduring programs. The Bachelor of Landscape Architecture (BLA) and the Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA), both professionally accredited programs, have produced landscape architects who practice around the world and participate in the full spectrum of the discipline. SEDRD invites applications from individuals who want to join as a colleague, to work collaboratively in continuing to foster Guelph’s professional programs through rigorous teaching, research, and who have a genuine interest in the knowledge areas and practice of Landscape Architecture.The most common distribution of effort for SEDRD faculty is teaching (40%), research (40%) and service/outreach (20%). The ideal candidate will be an early career professional with the following qualifications:

  • A PhD degree preferred in Landscape Architecture, or terminal degree in Landscape Architecture with a minimum of 3 years’ professional experience in pursuing effective landscape architectural outcomes through leadership, collaboration and innovative design.
  • Demonstrated ability to raise funds for research and development projects from private and public sector granting agencies;
  • Established record of publication (creative works included) in interdisciplinary peer-reviewed journals;
  • Work experience and/or educational background appropriate to teach undergraduate and graduate level courses and to mentor student interests in at least three of the following subject areas: design theory and history; site planning and urban design; ecological design, green infrastructure and environmental resiliency; climate change; plant identification and planting design; professional practice; cultural landscapes; Indigenous communities; human health and well-being; social justice; and, analog and/or digital technologies for design communication and management. Alternatively, self-declaration of subject areas not noted in this listing, may be considered.
  • Certification by a professional landscape architecture body, or work experience and/or educational background appropriate to qualify for candidate status with one of the nine (9) sub-component associations of the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects (CSLA) within five years of appointment.
