They will be expected to maintain established quality control standards, compile records for analytical study and work in accordance with prescribed safety procedures and regulations.This is an exciting opportunity to work in an environment where you will contribute to OPG’s public outreach, engagement and education efforts as part of the company’s commitment to growing its social license.KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Provide chemical and environmental technical expertise as they relate to the workplace, including workplace hazards. Work with environmental and health and safety legislation and chemical and waste management as it affects the workplace. Carry out both routine and non-standard tests and analyses, associated with station chemistry, hazardous material identification, water treatment, and environmental monitoring processes associated within an industrial plant environment. Make recommendations associated with system chemistry including the water treatment plant and other areas of the station.
- Assist in the implementation of local and corporate programs relative to concerns regarding environmental legislation, waste management, contaminated lands, emergency preparedness and response plans, and health and safety issues.
- Carry out a variety of measurements including testing of chemical or environmental related equipment and processes to recognized standards and procedures.
- Perform sampling and analyses according to established procedures. Perform various tests as required on a routine and non-routine basis.
- Participate in commissioning activities associated with plant modifications, equipment start-ups and maintenance programs.
- Participate in the development and maintenance of a reporting system to provide feedback for controlling work, materials, costs, and other purposes.
- Initiate or require corrective actions to address adverse system trends. These actions must be compliant with approved, applicable governance.
- Assist in the development and implementation of new chemical testing procedures and methods. Hold required regulatory licenses required to perform the duties.
- Responsible for all aspects of operating assigned equipment and systems. Perform basic maintenance for instruments and sampling equipment.
- Accountable for the health, safety and well-being of self and others, in accordance with technical/ operating procedures and standards, and includes the development of technical/operating solutions to problems
EDUCATION
- Grade 12 or equivalent, plus two years of further study in a community college in a Chemical Technician Laboratory program or Environmental Technician program.
QUALIFICATIONS
- A minimum of 2+ years laboratory experience in a related industry is strongly preferred.
- Related Industries such as: Nuclear Generating Stations, Thermal Generating Stations, Refineries/Steel Mills/Paper Mills, Chemical manufacturers and Nuclear Laboratories
- Work planning and execution skills Knowledge of chemical analytical procedures Knowledge of on-line instrumentation Knowledge of laboratory QA/QC programs
- Knowledge of environmental monitoring systems Knowledge of laboratory safety principles Knowledge of theoretical chemistry principles
- Experience working with LIMS (lab information management system) would be an asset. Excellent attention to detail and analytical mindset
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Excellent problem solving skills
