Position SummaryThe University of New Mexico’s Hearing Office seeks a Civil Rights Advisor to support and guide students, faculty, and/or staff engaged as complainants in civil rights proceedings. This individual advises participants of policies and procedures and accompanies participants to meetings and civil rights hearings. This position is in support of the 2020 Updated Title IX Regulations that became effective in August 2020.Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Provides support, guidance, and information to students, faculty, or staff who are complainants or respondents in civil rights proceedings.
  • Assists participants in understanding the relevant University policies, and in navigating the administrative hearing process.
  • Reviews documents, participates in gathering facts, and helps prepare the participant for proceedings, to include advising on the potential impact of the various choices and outcomes.
  • Accompanies participants to pre-hearing conferences and hearings and manages participants’ expectations of the hearing process.
  • Assists the participant at the hearing phase of the proceeding and provides guidance on the direct parties and witnesses.
  • Performs the cross-examination of parties and witnesses.
  • Collaborates with stakeholders and other advisors, as appropriate.

Conditions of Employment

Minimum QualificationsBachelor’s degree in a directly related field; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both orally and in writing.
  • The ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Knowledge of legal documentation procedures and requirements.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and University compliance laws, guidelines, and procedures.
  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree preferred.
