Consultancy – Labor Rights InitiativeThe is the ABA’s focal entity for critical human rights concerns in the United States and around the world. The ABA Center for Human Rights (the Center) works to promote and protect human rights worldwide by mobilizing lawyers to defend threatened advocates, protect vulnerable communities, and hold governments accountable under law.The supports unions, worker rights organizations, and individual labor activists in securing labor rights. The rise of due diligence laws such as the has prompted a renewed focus on the relationship between corporate practices and the realization of internationally recognized labor rights.The is seeking organizations to conduct research and follow up advocacy (January – December 2025) in a country in Eastern Africa focusing on the employment practices of multi-national corporations in the region/countries and avenues for future labor rights advocacy. The consultant will conduct in-depth factual and legal investigation into the employment relationships utilized within the jurisdiction(s), the effects of different hiring modalities on workers’ labor rights, and the role of the regulatory environment in the jurisdiction(s) analyzed. This will be a remote consultancy.Responsibilities can include:Providing substantive support and expertise to the ABA Center for Human Rights Labor Rights Initiative.Conducting in-depth legal and factual research.Writing memoranda, speeches, or articles.Offering substantive advice, information, and policy recommendations.Facilitating contact and maintaining relationships with government entities, unions, international organizations, and civil society.Communicating, coordinating, and liaising with the Initiative’s partners.Providing additional support for a range of duties relating to case strategy, management, advocacy, and other matters regarding the execution of case work.Qualifications shall include:Excellent written and verbal communication skills.Previous experience with fact-finding investigative research.Previous experience with international labor rights and/or labor unions desired, particularly in Eastern Africa.How to Apply:Please send the following documents in a single PDF to chr.opportunities@americanbar.org and copy April Artrip at april.artrip@americanbar.org:Proposal outlining research experience and approach into conducting fact-finding investigations.
