Student Affairs is a collection of integrated units that collaborates with faculty, staff and students to enhance the student experience. We promote an inclusive, holistic and student-centric approach to learning and academic success and act as a professional resource in the delivery of evidence-based student enrolment, wellness, development and academic support programs and services. Reporting to the Director, Student Success, the Coordinator provides leadership in the development, implementation and coordination of programs to support study skills.
Key Responsibilities

  • Compile research and make recommendations on best practices in Studying for Success programming. Areas include: time management, goal setting, motivation, note-taking, critical reading, active listening, exam preparation strategies, problem-solving etc.
  • Liaise with advisors, faculty members, deans and other staff from all undergraduate and graduate faculties to gain insights on needs of students in academic difficulty.
  • Conceptualize, write, and develop content for Studying for Success workshops, educational and reference material and services. Evaluate existing workshops and improve upon as necessary. Deliver workshops to groups of students on Dalhousie and King’s campuses.
  • Train, mentor, and supervise student “Studying for Success” coaches and tutors.
  • Meet with students in academic difficulty to help them assess their strengths, weaknesses, and challenges, and to help them develop goals and action plans in the area of study skills.
  • Employ, train and supervise tutors from across the curriculum to support the academic development of students in all programs.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in relevant discipline, with five years related experience (or an equivalent combination of training and experience).
  • Strong understanding of theoretical and pedagogical frameworks and approaches to learning and development
  • Knowledge of student intersectionality and key factors that can be obstacles to student success, and of best practices in preventing and/or dealing with them.
  • Exceptional listening and coaching skills, as well as evidence of leadership ability.
  • Experience liaising between various academic and student services units in a university setting.
  • Demonstrated professional commitment to fostering a culture of respect and actively contributing to diversity and inclusivity in the workplace.
