This is an unpaid/volunteer opportunity with the 17th Judicial District Probation Department in Adams County (Westminster/Commerce City). These positions are not eligible for benefits.

Our Volunteer/Deputy Probation Officer’s (DPOs) are introduced to all duties of a probation officer. They write legal reports such as warrants, summons, terminations, extensions, and special reports. They shadow and mentor with Probation Officers in different types of caseloads to receive a well-rounded view of different populations. They attend Court, attend trainings to include but not limited to Motivational Interviewing, Incentives and sanctions, Legal Report writing, Safety, etc. DPOs receive their own small caseload of low risk clients to supervise which involve conducting monthly or bi-monthly face to face appointments, tracking progress and compliance with court orders, offering incentives and sanctions, monitoring urine testing results, providing resources and referrals, and doing necessary assessments and screening instruments.
We require a 6-month minimum commitment and a minimum of 8 hours per week. You can do more than this, if you would like and we certainly encourage it, if able. Our hours of operation are Monday – Friday 8:00 am – 5:00 pm. We have limited space, and therefore there likely are not openings on some days.
DPOs must agree to and pass a criminal background check.
We have two offices that we staff with Deputy Probation Officer’s. Laurel Sunderman is the coordinator for our Westminster office and Brian Chiri is the coordinator for our Commerce City Office. We staff the offices based on department need, we try to accommodate DPO requests but do have to make office assignments based on need at the time we hire. Our DPOs provide a great service to our department as our units supervise over 800 cases. In turn, we hope to provide training and valuable hands on experience to our DPOs.
