Are you ready to join us?Meet the team The finance team at the Pembina Institute plays a critical role in ensuring the financial integrity and sustainability of the organization. As a cornerstone of our mission, the team is responsible for comprehensive financial management, including budgeting, forecasting, reporting, payroll, and regulatory compliance in alignment with ASNPO standards. By providing financial oversight, accurate insights, and seamless collaboration with internal and external partners, the finance team empowers the Pembina Institute to achieve its objectives while upholding the highest standards of accountability, efficiency, and transparency.The opportunity Reporting to the Deputy Executive Director, the Director, Finance plays a strategic and hands-on role in managing the Pembina Institute’s financial and accounting systems. This position includes overseeing the daily operations of the finance team, ensuring efficient processes that align with the organization’s mission and objectives, and managing employee workflows, financial systems, and associated training. Working closely with the leadership team, the Director will guide financial planning, analysis, budgeting and forecasting, playing a key role in the organization’s annual budget process.Your key responsibilities Strategic financial planning

  • Collaborate with the Deputy Executive Director and Senior Leadership Team to lead budgeting, forecasting and financial planning processes, aligning initiatives with the Pembina Institute’s strategic priorities.
  • Lead the coordination and preparation of Pembina’s annual budget process, providing tools, templates, and training to support effective financial management.

Financial operations and reporting

  • Manage all accounting and financial activities, including bookkeeping, payroll, account reconciliation, cash flow management, and monthly accounting processes.
  • Oversee the preparation of accurate monthly financial statements, project/program reporting, and compliance with funding agreements.
  • Provide quarterly financial reports to the Board of Directors and its Finance and Audit Committee, to support board governance and decision-making.

Leadership, collaboration, and communication

  • Oversee recruitment, development, training, mentorship and succession planning for the finance team, ensuring alignment with group goals, strategies, and key performance indicators.
  • Provide mentorship and coaching to staff across the organization, fostering professional growth, enhancing financial expertise, and promoting best practices.
  • Support internal leaders and program teams by addressing financial needs and providing clear communication on key financial updates, deadlines, and processes.

Compliance and controls

  • Ensure organizational compliance with statutory requirements, including CRA filings (T3010, payroll remittances, GST/HST), revenue recognition, and adherence to financial controls and processes.
  • Lead the annual audit process with external auditors, addressing findings and implementing improvements.
  • Maintain external relationships with banking institutions, auditors, contractors, and vendors to support financial operations.

Process improvement and innovation

  • Develop and oversee financial process management, organizational training, and the use of financial tools to support efficiency and data integrity.
  • Stay current with best practices to monitor financial risks, improve compliance, and ensure the security of personnel and financial information.

Support organizational impact

  • Drive the development of financial strategies that contribute to organizational sustainability, effectively manage change, and ensure the alignment of financial operations with the Pembina Institute’s mission and goals.

Education and credentials

  • Post-secondary education in business, commerce, accounting, or a related field. A professional designation such as CPA/CA is strongly preferred, although a combination of relevant work experience and education may be considered.

Professional experience

  • Ten or more years of progressively responsible work experience in finance or accounting, showcasing expertise in full-cycle bookkeeping and financial management.
  • Experience in the not-for-profit or charitable sector is preferred, with a demonstrated understanding of its unique financial and operational needs.
  • Three or more years of experience directly managing people or leading a team, with a focus on fostering collaboration and accountability.

Financial expertise

  • Strong knowledge of financial accounting principles, annual budgeting, and planning processes, with the ability to identify and mitigate business risks while ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Familiarity with ASNPO reporting standards, project accounting best practices, and charity-specific operations, including donor tax receipts and T3010 reporting, is beneficial.

Technical proficiency

  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, project database programs, and accounting software. Experience with cloud-based accounting systems, particularly Sage Intacct or similar ERP platforms, is preferred.
  • Experience presenting financial information and recommendations to diverse stakeholders, including leadership teams, to support informed decision-making.

Additional assets

  • Familiarity with federal government funding applications, requirements, and reporting processes is a strong asset.
  • A proactive and detail-oriented approach to managing financial systems and processes within complex organizations.

Compensation and benefits The hiring range for the position is $94,554 to $112,940 annually based on a 37.5-hour work week, with a range maximum of $131,325. Within this range, individual pay is determined by factors including job-related skills, related experience, education and/or training, and internal equity.We know that to meet these ambitious goals, our people are the core.
