Job DescriptionThe Director is responsible for all strategic, administrative, and budget oversight for the Gender Relations Center (GRC). They will provide expertise on gender, sexuality, and identity formation, working with the entire staff of the GRC in developing and supporting an environment at Notre Dame that fosters safe and healthy relationships while promoting the moral formation of undergraduate and graduate students consistent with the University’s Catholic identity, mission, and values.The Director serves as a conduit through which internal and external stakeholders are convened to advance the holistic development and personal integration of the University’s students. They lead a team of three assistant directors to further the mission of the office through mentorship to student leaders who help design and implement programs, training, and initiatives across campus.The Director is a full time 12 month position with various late night and weekend programming responsibilities throughout the academic year, as well as some limited evening and weekend responsibilities throughout the summer. This position reports to the Executive Director of Diversity and Engagement within the Division of Student Affairs.Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Departmental Management – Establishes and executes all strategic oversight for the office in terms of staffing, budget and initiatives; manages the operating budget; tracks expenditures and monitors programming funds on a monthly/annual basis; provides all administrative oversight for the office, including: development of annual goals and priorities; new/revised educational initiatives, outreach services and pastoral care efforts; utilizes assessment data to examine emerging trends within campus culture and to monitor efficacy of office initiatives; generates annual reports to track the advancement of the strategic plan for the office.
  • Personnel Management – Supervises and manages three full-time assistant directors; assigns and supervises all work for the department, working with each assistant director in the relevant subject matter; has responsibility for making decisions on hiring, pay, and performance evaluation of employees; supervise graduate student interns and employees when applicable; indirectly supervises outside vendors, student fellows, undergraduate student employees, and volunteer peer educators; mentors leaders in campus clubs and organizations.
  • Educational Initiative – Serves as a speaker for campus-wide programs and initiatives; consults with Residential Life to develop tailored programs for residence hall communities; collaborates with other campus partners including rectors, Multicultural Student Programs and Services, Office of Student Enrichment, Student Activities Office, New Student Engagement and Student Athlete Welfare and Development to provide specialized trainings; collaborates with academic partners in Gender Studies, Theology, Center for Ethics and Culture, and Institute for Church Life; and develops appropriate assessment protocol for educational programming. Provide leadership and guidance to staff and campus partners in designing targeted educational programs, initiatives, and/or exercises to raise awareness around issues related to the GRC’s mission.
  • Outreach Services – Participates in University task groups, boards and committees; networks with faculty, staff and students; presents original work at academic and student life conferences; serves as a liaison with other Catholic colleges and universities, peer institutions and local nonprofit organizations; benchmarks and shares best practices to serve as a flagship for other Catholic institutions.
  • Pastoral Consultation – Makes referrals to campus and local resources; collaborates with Residential Life staff regarding student development issues/cases; consults with faculty, staff, students and parents as needed; assists Campus Ministry in creating retreats which address relationship issues from a pastoral and mission perspective; collaborates with Campus Ministry, University Counseling Center and other Student Affairs departments and professionals to provide campus leadership in supporting and ministering to the needs of special groups (e.g., LGBTQ persons, graduate/professional students, student athletes, etc.); when appropriate, collaborates with Residential Life, Multicultural Student Programs and Services, Office of Student Enrichment, and Student Activities Office in promoting a restorative justice approach to reconciliation in the Notre Dame student community.
  • Diversity and Engagement – Regularly collaborates with other departments within the Division of Student Affairs (Campus Ministry, Residential Life, etc.), student organizations and clubs, and other university units to enhance the GRC’s work with identity, intersectionality, and inclusion throughout the Notre Dame community. Participates as an integral member of the Diversity and Engagement team, working closely and collaborating with the Multicultural Student Programs and Service office and the Office of Student Enrichment in the Center for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Theology/Ministry, College Student Personnel, Higher Education Administration, Counseling, Education or related field.
  • 7+ years’ of experience in ministry or administration, ideally within Catholic higher education or a non-profit agency required.
  • Knowledge of current trends and issues within higher education, particularly related to identity, gender, sexuality, and student formation
  • Knowledge of research and current developments in the field of Gender Studies and other appropriate fields, including Psychology, Sociology, and Philosophy
  • Understanding of Catholic teachings on topics related to gender, sexuality and relationships
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in higher education and effectively with a diverse group that includes students, staff, faculty and the public
  • Ability to supervise a team of professional staff, students, and volunteers
  • Ability to design, coordinate, implement and evaluate programs with and for students, administrators, faculty and staff
  • Strong communication skills, both written and oral, with a facility for public speaking
  • Strong organizational skills, with a demonstrated attention to detail
  • Effective interpersonal skills, including a willingness to create a challenging but welcoming environment for all people
  • Possess competence and general familiarity with standard technology (MS Office Suite, including Excel, PowerPoint; Illustrator; database application; research and statistical applications; Banner; Contribute; Google suite)
  • The successful candidate will also possess a commitment to formulating formational opportunities, consistent with the mission of a Catholic University founded by the Congregation of Holy Cross.
