Director of Life Cycle Assessment

This role will preferably be based at UK GSK site but can be based at other strategic GSK locations on a case-by-case basis.

GSK has ambitious environmental sustainability goals to have a net zero impact on climate and a net positive impact on nature by 2030 across our entire end to end value chain.

This exciting new position is responsible for defining and delivering technical aspects of the sustainability strategy.

This position is responsible for:

1) Leading a team of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) specialists supporting them to develop and identify environmental impact reduction plans, working across teams to deliver GSK’s commitment to a nature positive world, by reducing our environmental impacts across, carbon, water, materials, and biodiversity.

2) Acting as a subject matter expert on sustainability (inc. LCA, product carbon & water footprints, emerging LCA impact categories) to provide input into product strategy.

3) Agree and prioritise reduction strategies and lead key project initiatives which are significant to our ambition. Providing technical depth on identified hotspots, from raw materials, our processes (product & packaging), to patient use, managing trade-offs between different life cycle stages.

The role requires working with many different senior stakeholders, working across GSC(Global Supply Chain) and R&D to ensure alignment the strategical goals and vision are met. A deep understanding of our product and process operations, a proven track record of turning data into insights, a robust approach to preparing technical documentation and good writing and communication skills are all required.

In this role you will:

  • Lead a team of LCA analysts (3-5 direct) and manage our LCA practitioners’ networks within GSC.
  • Identify and manage demand for product footprints, providing clarity and prioritisation to deliver a LCA network plan.
  • Develop actionable insights from the portfolio to reduce the environmental impact of GSK’s products and manufacturing processes.
  • Develop standard approach to LCA, managing data, documents, and outputs.
  • Ensure that LCA outputs are communicated effectively to stakeholders across the business, providing clear guidance on opportunities & risks to enable effective action plans and roadmaps.
  • Influence stakeholders to implement environmental impact reduction projects to deliver GSK’s sustainability commitments.
  • Build sustainability capability and awareness of LCA and product footprints in GSK’s functions and supply chain leaders by creating dashboards, forecasts with into product/brand specific analyses of hotspots and focus areas for reduction.
  • Produce and maintain forecast glidepaths for the environmental impact of GSK’s products, running portfolio analysis and modelling of future impacts based on the LRF’s.
  • Streamline and automate the development of product LCA.
  • Lead the development of biopharma sector product category rules for GSK for adoption by the industry and its supply chain.

Why You?

Required Qualifications and experience: 

  • Degree qualified in a Scientific, Engineering, Biochemistry, Chemical or Pharmaceutical Engineering.
  • Considerable demonstrated experience in leading technical, operational and/or sustainability teams across multiple geographical areas.
  • In depth knowledge of US/EU/ROW regulations; able to interact with governmental bodies in order to evaluate opportunities for the grants or any other funding’s related to scientific/development needs. Active engagement in regulatory document writing and audits.
  • Excellent written skills, with specific experience authoring reports/requests and other related deliverables.
  • Excellent communication skills; a pro-active and collaborative team approach, engendering inclusion, support and motivation amongst peers; a desire to go beyond process and procedure, with an ability to think innovatively to enhance program outcomes.
  • A strong background to drive positive change in sustainability, with credibility and the ability to influence at senior levels of the organisation without direct line management Extensive experience and in-depth scientific/technical knowledge of pharmaceutical products whether in process development, product development, scale-up, or operations.

Preferred Qualifications and experience:

  • Masters or PHD qualification in a relevant discipline.
  • Ability to work independently and follow through on assignments and delivery of the GSK GCS strategy without direction.
  • Experience in managing a team of in-house technical experts and consultants.
  • Ability to perform within a dynamic and stressful environment and to be able to remain calm under pressure and during conflict.
  • Proven capabilities in enabling and driving change, delivering solutions, developing people, and building relationships across multiple interfaces and in a matrix environment
  • Previous experience in Operational, Engineering and Technical roles
  • Ability to interact effectively and appropriately with customers in other functions and beyond, senior management and co-workers.
