The Office of the Vice-Principal Research and Innovation is responsible for enhancing the overall research profile of UTSC locally, nationally and internationally.Working collaboratively with the Vice Principal Research and Innovation (VPRI), Senior Leaders, Chairs, and Faculty members, the Director, Office of the VP Research will make significant contributions to research planning, strategic direction, and development of research and management processes. The incumbent will work within a vibrant work environment undergoing significant research expansion and provide vision and direction to the Office of the VP Research and Innovation. The Director will have solid understanding of Tri-Council and other funding agencies in order to support collaborations and relationships between UTSC and external research sponsors and community collaborators.Reporting to the Vice-Principal Research and Innovation (VPRI), the Director is responsible for providing strategic leadership on research, innovation, ethics, and knowledge transfer-related issues, as these relate to UTSC’s strategic plan, strategic research plan and the aspirations of UTSC’s faculty, and for developing campus-wide research objectives, strategies and long-term plans. In collaboration with the VPRI, the Director facilitates the targeted growth of research activities and infrastructure at UTSC. In the absence of the VPRI, the incumbent will represent the strategic vision and leadership of the Office. The incumbent is responsible for strategic planning, resource allocation and the general leadership and oversight of managers in support of the effective delivery of the research support services.The incumbent is responsible for the coordination, planning, development, implementation, evaluation and promotion of research and innovation related programs and services at UTSC for students, staff, faculty and the community at large. This includes operational responsibility for core research infrastructure, including The Sam Ibrahim Centre for Inclusive Excellence in Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Leadership. The Director also acts as the lead and champion for the knowledge-transfer, knowledge-mobilization, and innovation management activities. The incumbent advises the senior academic administrators, Chairs/Directors and committees about research, and knowledge transfer and mobilization-related issues, oversees and directs staff engaged in the entrepreneurship and innovation dimensions of the office’s mandate, and establishes and maintains critical connections with senior academic and administrative leaders across the University. In addition, the incumbent supports the research environment at UTSC by cultivating relationships with potential external research partners and collaborators.Qualifications Required:I. EDUCATIONUniversity degree at the Masters’s level or acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience. A PhD is considered an asset.II. EXPERIENCEMinimum ten years’ experience with increasing responsibility in research in a research-intensive environment, with demonstrated success in working with and advising senior academic administrators. Extensive experience interpreting University policies and procedures and navigating complex influence and authority structures. Experience reviewing and negotiating legal agreements, directing communication and marketing activities, managing, forecasting and planning budgets and promoting knowledge mobilization activities. Experience managing and leading staff, preferably in a unionized environment. Exposure to strategic research planning and process development.III. SKILLSMust have and maintain depth and breadth of knowledge of research funding programs, ethics guidelines, knowledge mobilization/innovation management, and related University policies, procedures, and regulations in order to provide leadership and direction to academic administrators on a variety of related areas. Computer proficiency in MS Office & Adobe’s Creative Suite. Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills, effective problem-solving skills, and superior judgment are mandatory. Demonstrated skills in budget management and planning, previous experience supervising staff, and understanding and application of EDI principles are required. The ability to exercise superior judgment, discretion and tact, and be self-directed and take initiative often without prior training or instructions are needed skills.IV. OTHERProven analytical and decision-making abilities combined with excellent interpersonal and written communication skills. Demonstrated commitment to faculty and student service. Proven ability to build team support and to develop cooperative, collegial working relationships with a broad range of University and external constituencies. Strong leadership abilities, including the ability to foster confidence and motivation in staff. Ability to learn continually ‘on the job’ in a dynamic work environment, , to keep abreast of the rapid changes in the research environment..
