We are currently seeking an experienced, collaborative and dynamic Director, Safety, Security & Emergency Management to oversee and implement comprehensive safety, security, and emergency management strategies for Harbourfront Centre.Position Title: Director, Safety, Security & Emergency ManagementDepartment: Site OperationsReporting to: Chief Operation OfficerDirect reports: Security ManagerType of Employment: Full-time, 35 hours per weekCompensation: Annual salary of $90,000 – $100,000, plus a comprehensive benefits packageWork Location: Toronto, at our waterfront campus. A hybrid work model might be possible based on our Remote Work Policy of (3 days a week on site)Summary Of FunctionThis role involves planning, coordinating, and directing all activities related to safeguarding the organization’s assets, employees, attendees, and facilities during events. The incumbent will develop and execute policies and procedures to ensure the safety and security of all stakeholders while maintaining compliance with all local, provincial, and federal regulations.Duties

  • Design and enforce comprehensive safety, security & emergency management policies and procedures for the day-to-day operations of the site as well as tailored to the needs of small and large-scale events including risk assessments, emergency response procedures, and crisis communication strategies.
  • Develop and conduct training programs on safety, security, and emergency procedures for employees and volunteers.
  • Promote a culture of safety and security awareness throughout the organization.
  • Conduct regular safety audits and inspections of sites and facilities and make recommendations for corrective actions.
  • Lead the response to incidents, emergencies, and crises, ensuring timely and effective resolution.
  • Document and analyze incidents to develop preventive measures and improve response strategies and document all injury statistics.
  • Oversee Investigations of all disturbances on or in relation to the property – but not limited to – trespass, theft, fire/intruder alarms, missing persons, and determines the necessary response.
  • Conduct thorough review of potential violent risks affecting campus and brief senior management.
  • Oversee all aspects of the security portfolio including access & camera system and physical security operations procedures over both an in-house and contract security complement.
  • Oversee hazard and risk registry of entire organization and applied administrative controls to mitigate risk levels.
  • Manage the Fire Safety Program including monthly and annual testing of all devices, updating fire safety plans, documenting and mitigating fire hazards and develop.
  • Supervise and provide leadership to the Manager of Security and security supervisors, ensuring the effective implementation of security policies and procedures.
  • Manage the contract security team, overseeing their performance, compliance with security protocols, and integration with the overall security strategy.
  • Prepare department budget data and monitor expenses within budget guidelines.
  • Perform other duties of a similar nature as assigned and as needed.

Requirements

  • Comprehensive knowledge of safety, emergency management and security methods, policies and best practices acquired through a minimum of 8-10 years of experience in safety, security or emergency management or a combination and 3-5 years managerial experience.
  • Degree/diploma in safety, emergency management or security. Graduate of a recognized diploma or degree in Safety, Emergency Management and/or Security/Law Enforcement is considered ideal.
  • Working knowledge of security’s powers of arrest, the Trespass to Property Act and related sections of the Criminal Code of Canada
  • Knowledge of security and safety equipment, fire alarm systems and fire life safety equipment systems (for example, portable radios, CCTV, access control systems, fire panels and firefighting equipment).
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills to be able to interact with confidence with a wide variety of people including visitors and external agencies.
  • A strong ability to persuade, sell and negotiate in a tactful and diplomatic manner.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and relationship management skills with the ability to develop partnerships and motivate and develop subordinate staff.
  • Excellent organizational skills with proven ability to set and meet priorities and deadlines.
  • Strong working knowledge of common computer programs e.g., MS Word, Excel, and email.
  • PSP (Physical Security Professional) designation is desirable.
  • CPP (Certified Protection Professional) designation is considered an asset.
