Summary This position is located in Facilities Management Division (AFM), Operations Department of the National Gallery of Art. The purpose of this position is the installation, modification, repairing, inspecting, troubleshooting, testing, loading and, maintaining of building electrical components, circuits, associated fixtures, controls, equipment and systems. Responsibilities The incumbent for this position will: Possess the knowledge of how to properly maintain, and lubricate electric motors, and what maintenance activities are to be performed on electric heaters, electric panels, distribution and electric load centers, circuits, balancing of electrical loads in electric panels. Performs proper maintenance procedures for equipment. Maintains all assigned tools and instruments in first class condition. Knowledge of electrical theory regarding Ohms Law, electron flow, magnetic induction, electric motor operation, capacitance, reactance, direct and alternating current flow. Must be able to read, draw and interpret basic electrical ladder and construction diagrams and drawings. Applies identification markings and stamps to tools issued. Knowledge of how the individual parts within electrical systems operate, are interrelated, and controlled to be able to troubleshoot, repair, maintain, and operate. Qualifications SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Candidates must meet the Qualification Standards for Electrician WG-2805-10 which includes possession of the following job elements: Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision. Knowledge of electrical equipment. Theory and instruments used in shop and trade practices . Technical practices Ability to use and maintain hand tools. Troubleshooting. Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to perform cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Must be able to work unscheduled evening and weekend hours. Requires work inside and outside, in all kinds of weather. Work is in areas that are noisy, dirty, dusty and greasy. Work can be performed 30 feet above the floor, or more. Work can be in confined spaces. Work carries risk of electrical shock and burns, and entanglement in moving machinery parts. Work is near hazardous materials and chemicals. Incumbent will be required to walk climb, crawl ,kneel, stoop, bend, push and pull for extended periods of time. Must have the ability to distinguish color and shades of color for wire color codes. Must be able to lift and carry 40 pounds. “Experience” refers to paid and unpaid experience. Examples of qualifying unpaid experience may include: volunteer work done through National Service programs (such as Peace Corps and AmeriCorps); as well as work for other community-based philanthropic and social organizations. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills; and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Time-in-Grade: Current Federal employees must meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement to receive consideration under merit promotion procedures.
