Job description

Would you like to make a difference in the Environment? Can you see yourself overseeing the development, modelling and calculations of Derived Release Limits(DRL) for CRL as well as other CNL sites? If you answered yes, then this may be the job for you! Our Chalk River location is looking for an Environmental Risk Assessor to provide support for Environmental Risk Assessments.What will you be doing!

  • Overseeing the development and updates of the DRL models in accordance with CSA N288.1.
  • Inputting to the IMPACT code including design of conceptual models, transcription of assumptions and site-specific parameters, replication modelling and verification, calculation of the Derived Release Limits for CRL and other CNL sites.
  • Engaging with third party consultants as needed.
  • Developing and executing any follow up activities or supplementary studies needed to support DRL calculations, including public surveys, developing site-specific parameter values, or coordinating with other groups to ensure that new and emerging research data is incorporated into the DRLs.
  • Participating in the CSA Technical Subcommittee for N288.1, representing CNL.
  • Understanding and interpreting CNSC REG DOC 2.9.2 and apply knowledge to developing release limits for CNL sites.
  • Providing support and advice to projects in their conduct of Best Available Technology Economically Achievable (BATEA) assessments, as required by CNSC REG DOC 2.9.2.
  • Assisting in the updates of sites’ ERAs, developed in accordance with CSA N288.6.
  • Developing and executing any follow up activities or supplementary studies needed to support sites’ ERAs.
  • Participating in and/or coordinating a risk assessment committee to ensure consistency of the various risk assessment activities conducted at CNL, within and across the sites.
  • Coordinating with other groups at CNL to ensure that new and emerging research data is incorporated into ERAs.
  • Assisting effluent and environmental monitoring programs in incorporating results of DRL models and ERAs, and assist groundwater monitoring programs in assessment of groundwater protection.
  • Conducting risk assessment(s) as needed in support of evaluating the significance of operations, activities and projects.
  • Providing technical reviews of Impact Assessments or environmental review documentation.
  • Preparing or assisting in the preparation of Impact Assessment or environmental review documentation.
  • Assisting in ongoing maintenance of the Environmental Protection Program documentation.
  • Participating in external audits/inspections.
  • Building and maintaining internal and external relationships with frequent interactions with auditors/inspectors, CNL departments, environmental protection program staff, external vendors etc.
  • Other duties as assigned by your manager.

What we are looking for :

  • Education
  • Masters or Ph.D in Science, Engineering, Environmental Toxicology, Environmental Sciences or related field from a university of recognized standing, or membership in an engineering or scientific professional organization authorized by statute to establish qualification for membership in that organization, and a minimum of 10 years relevant experience.
  • Experience
  • Experience in environmental pathway modelling and preparation of environmental assessments and/or environmental risk assessments is required.
  • Broad training and experience which demonstrates an ability to execute complex projects with a high level of competence.
  • Previous supervisory experience suggested.
  • Extensive knowledge of environmental legislation, applicable environmental federal and provincial regulations, and national environmental standards applicable in the nuclear sector.
  • Experience in design of environmental monitoring activities.
  • Familiarity with environmental aspects of the operation of nuclear sites would be highly desirable.
  • Experience working with members of Indigenous communities through engagement exercises and/or programs is an asset.
  • Working knowledge of various sustainability programs, the legislation governing these initiatives and some involvement in them.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Excellent writing, presentation, and public speaking skills – must be able to gather, analyze, and assemble a variety of technical information and to present the information in a clear, concise, and logical manner for technical audiences, and in an accessible manner for non-technical audiences.
  • Must have a demonstrated ability to interact effectively with managers and staff of facilities, contractors, and support groups, and to work as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to have tact and diplomacy when addressing public and regulatory consultation events and general communications with various community groups and stakeholders.
  • Ability to deliver accurate work with attention to detail and under the pressure of stringent deadlines.
  • Ability to work under pressure, conflicting priorities, and regulatory requirements.
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills.
  • Must be self-motivated, able to function independently and to demonstrate the capability of coordinating a multi-disciplinary team including technical consultants by exhibiting good judgement and leadership in technical and interpersonal areas.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite Applications (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook) is required.
  • Prior knowledge of the IMPACT code, or similar, is an asset.
  • Familiarity with the use of data management software (e.g., databases, GIS) is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of Federal or Provincial Environmental Risk Assessment guidance is required.
  • Knowledge of environmental pathway modelling and environmental toxicology is required.
  • Knowledge of Federal and Ontario environmental laws and regulations is required, specifically the Canadian Impact Assessment Act.
  • Knowledge of CSA standards N288.1 and N288.6 is highly desirable.
  • Some knowledge of ISO-14001 standards and its application is desirable.
  • Qualified Environmental Professional designation is desirable.
  • Security Clearance Eligibility Required
  • Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat’s “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security.”

Working Conditions :

  • Office Work, periodic field presence, off-site visits.
  • Predominantly office work, periodic field presence required, frequent interactions with field & laboratory staff, managers and staff from various parts of the organization, and other Environmental Specialists.
