DescriptionThe Cook prepares and serves nutritious meals as outlined on menus in accordance with applicable food service and safety regulations.KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:Key Responsibilities: (include but are not limited to):

  • Planning, preparing menus and assisting in meal preparation for soup kitchen lunches
  • This is a position based on flexible hours if needed
  • Consult with the Management or designate on issues as they arise
  • Welcoming kitchen volunteers and organizing their work for the day
  • Organizing food and other donations for kitchen use that come through donations, retail and the food recovery programs
  • Ensuring that all food and frozen items are cleaned before being stored away
  • Working with Shelter Cook and Food Bank Worker checking the supply of fresh produce, canned foods and dry goods that are bought on an ongoing basis for kitchen use E.g. potatoes, carrots, onions, margarine, spices etc.
  • Working with Shelter Cook rotating, restocking, and organizing food and all other items pertaining to the kitchen.
  • Regularly cleaning the walk-in cooler, walk-in freezer and soup kitchen chest freezers on a rotation basis.
  • Thorough cleaning of the stove and oven on a weekly basis
  • General maintenance of soup kitchen equipment, (dishwasher e.g. replacing soap, rinsing fluid).
  • Leaving the kitchen secure, clean and ready for the Shelter Cook.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:Education, Training and Experience including lifeskills:

  • The successful job applicant will have completed Grade 12, or equivalent
  • Good reading, writing and communication skills
  • Food Safe Levels 1 and 2
  • Standard First Aid Certificate
  • Strong customer service ethics including ability to deal with the public in a friendly manner.
  • Ability to work in a team setting as well as willingness to take personal initiative.
  • Experience in cooking.
  • Proven experience that you are highly organized.
  • Demonstrated capacity to adapt to changes and interruptions to normal work routine.
  • Ability to sustain a daily routine of considerable lifting, reaching and bending.
  • Previous experience in a not-for-profit organization preferred.
  • Willingness to work with individuals or groups of differing backgrounds and cultures than your own.
  • Understanding of and support for the Mission Statement of The Salvation Army in Canada.

ADMINISTRATION:The employee shall:

  • Participate fully and constructively in staff meetings and in service training
  • Engage in formal evaluation sessions with your Supervisor.
  • As applicable suggest improvements to management
  • Represent the organization in a professional manner.

Work Environment:The incumbent’s work environment is typically located at the Care & Share Centre. The performance of the job requires continuous monitoring of the environment & attentiveness to working safety.The incumbent must take the following precautionary measures (in addition to health & safety rules):

  • Wear gloves to sort
  • Use fatigue mats and back belts when required
  • Universal Precautions

The incumbent will work under the following disagreeable conditions:

  • Dealing with angry people

  • Frequent interruptions and multitasking

  • Equipment and general office noise

  • Washrooms
  • Odours
  • Truck Fumes
  • Dealing with angry people
  • Work schedule may impact life (weeknights & weekends)

The employee may be exposed to the risk of minor to moderate injury or illnesses due to:

  • Exposure to infectious diseases
  • Exposure to toxic chemicals pressure with timelines
  • Constant Interruptions
  • Moving objects
  • Risk of back injuries (throwing back out)
  • Other potentially dangerous situations (eg. Hold ups)

Successful candidates, prior to hiring, may be required to provide:

  • Background check consent
  • A clear vulnerable sector screening
  • Completion of our online Abuse Training and required Health and Safety training
