First Peoples’ House staff will continue to dream a bigger dream for the next seven generations who have yet to make their mark here at the U of A.PositionThe Graduate oskâpêw (Student Helper) is critical in supporting FNMI graduate students pursuing advanced degrees and creating opportunities for undergraduate students to explore graduate studies.Under the direct supervision of the FPH onîkânîw (Leader), this role combines:Academic guidance for FNMI studentsProgram administrationStudent outreach and engagementCultural and holistic wellness supportThis position requires a deep understanding of graduate degree programs and experience developing and delivering holistic programming that meets the unique needs of FNMI students.DutiesAcademic & Career SupportProvide culturally grounded academic advising to FNMI graduate and undergraduate students on program requirements, course selection, career paths, and academic progress.Support FNMI graduate students in navigating funding opportunities, scholarships, and financial aid while assisting with application processes.Help students identify pathways to graduate studies and facilitate engagement opportunities for undergraduate students considering advanced degrees.Student Engagement & Relationship BuildingDevelop and coordinate outreach initiatives, workshops, and events to promote FNMI graduate student success.Build and maintain strong relationships with FNMI students, faculty, Elders, and community partners to support student retention and academic achievement.Integrating cultural protocols and fostering connections with elders and traditional knowledge keepers will ensure a safe and welcoming environment for students.Communications & Program AdministrationSupport social media, email campaigns, and event promotions to connect students with relevant opportunities.Assist with program planning, implementation, and evaluation to continuously improve student support services.QualificationsEducation & ExperienceA relevant Master’s degree.Experience working in student services in a post-secondary environment (preferred).Cultural Knowledge & Community ConnectionsFirst Nations, Métis, or Inuit identity with a strong understanding of cultural protocols and ceremonial practices.Preferred fluency in an Indigenous language (e.g., Stoney, Dogrib, Cree, Chipewyan, Dene, Inuktitut, Blackfoot, Ojibwe, Mechif).Well-established connections with Elders, Traditional Knowledge Keepers (TKK), or cultural ambassadors.Communication & Leadership SkillsExceptional public speaking and facilitation abilities for diverse audiences (students, Elders, faculty, and community partners).Professional communication skills, including writing, presentations, and digital literacy.Ability to navigate university policies, graduate program requirements, and student support services.Event Planning & Student SupportProven experience organizing large-scale events, orientations, and small group gatherings.Strong problem-solving, conflict resolution, and crisis management skills with a trauma-informed approach.Ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced, student-centered environment.Preferred ExperienceDirect experience working with FNMI students in a post-secondary setting.Deep understanding of FNMI student challenges, including financial, mental health needs, and academic systemic barriers.First Nation, Métis, or Inuit People of Canada DocumentationTo be considered eligible for this role designated for First Nation, Métis, or Inuit people of Canada for employment by the University of Alberta, applicants must provide one of the following forms of documentation:

  • a certified copy of a Status card from the Government of Canada;
  • a certified copy of a Métis membership card from one of the five Métis Provincial Affiliates or recognized Territorial organizations; Métis Nation of Alberta, Métis Nation of Ontario, Manitoba Métis Federation, Métis Nation Saskatchewan, Métis Nation British Columbia, Northwest Territory Métis Nation. Additionally, the student may present a membership card from the Métis Settlements General Council showing membership in a Métis Settlement of Alberta;
  • a certified copy of a Nunavut Trust Certificate card;
  • documentation that an ancestor’s name has been entered 1) in the Indian Register according to the Indian Act, or 2) on the band list of an individual band, or 3) as beneficiaries of the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement or other claim regions such as Nunatsiavut, Nunavik, and Inuvialuit;
  • written confirmation of Indigenous identity from Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada or Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated;
  • written confirmation of membership by a band council which has enacted its band membership code
