We’re offering an exciting opportunity for the right candidate to become part of the Customer, Brand & Engagement (CB&E) function; delivering our purpose of Banking – but fairer, more rewarding and for the good of society.Ensuring that our Risk teams focus on what matters and enables the CB&E function to sustainably achieve its ambitious priorities, and helping to grow risk capability within the function, provides a unique opportunity for an energetic, talented and communicative risk leader.We are looking for such an individual to provide strategic leadership of our Risk and Control agenda, working closely with the Chief Customer Officer and her Directors as well as colleagues across the Society and three lines of defence.The agenda will include supporting the Risk Director in leading risk engagement across material risk topics in our Marketing, Customer Strategy, Communications, Brand and Advertising teams. The opportunity involves continuing the transformation of the Risk Partnering team towards being a proactive and highly skilled part of the decision-making process.Further, the individual will embed a newly-focused Communications Risk team that drives material enhancement of the Society’s approach to Communications and Customer Understanding, a key pillar of the Consumer Duty.This entails year-round enterprise-wide engagement as well as considering the alignment and complementary approaches between Risk Partnering and Communications Risk. This is a new role within the CB&E Risk team and will involve line management of five colleagues, supporting Nationwide’s drive to manage high performance expectations and an exciting, dynamic and aspirational culture.At Nationwide we offer hybrid working wherever possible.   • Driving effective and consistent risk management activities across CB&E in line with our Enterprise Risk Management Framework and the Operational and Conduct Risk Approach.
  • Providing advice and guidance to the functional leadership and their teams to support decision making and the sustainable taking of risk.
  • Providing insightful risk commentary and drive the production of simplified reporting to support a streamlined governance model across functions.
  • Ensuring effective escalation and sustainable remediation of issues in line with the Society’s requirements.
  • Working collaboratively with partners across the three lines of defence to simplify and strengthen risk management practices for the benefit of the function and Society overall, focusing on what matters.
  • Creating and maintaining the function’s risk and control agenda and plan, working with the function to embed a forward-looking risk and control culture.
  • Embedding the Society’s Communications Risk critical controls in collaboration with Communications Owners from across the functions.
  • Driving a more data-driven and automated risk and control environment in CB&E.
  • Presenting at and deputising for the CB&E Risk Director and other members of CB&E leadership at risk and control governance forums.

About youThis is a challenging role that will be stretching and fulfilling for the right candidate. As a minimum you will have:

  • Senior leadership experience of owning a risk and control agenda in a scale retail financial services firm or Professional Services Firm or Regulator. You have proven experience in developing high value relationships at all levels in organisations, and command respect from senior executives.
  • Expert knowledge of Non-Financial Risk including Operational and Conduct Risk eg FCA Sourcebooks and SM&CR, and knowledge and experience of Marketing and Communications strategies and processes.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills, ability to nurture and lead a high-performing team leveraging individual styles and preferences, and adept at bringing groups together and galvanising action around a common vision and purpose with demonstrable examples of having delivered measurable results.
  • Resilient and calm under pressure, with an ability to step back and consider the bigger picture, and comfortable leading through uncertainty and ambiguity.
  • Strong critical thinking capability, with ability to comprehend and assimilate information rapidly, break down complex problems, and provide pragmatic solutions.
  • Ability to convey complex information or specialist knowledge in a clear and understandable way to suit different audiences, from Board level through to wider colleague engagement.
  • A growth mindset, with commitment to continuous innovation and learning, day in, day out and demonstrable capability to listen, learn and adapt.
  • A passionate advocacy of the Society’s strategy and purpose, and of the cultural and customer transformation that CB&E is leading.
