Shedd Aquarium’s Internship Program aims to provide meaningful career exploration for those seeking professions in non-profits, animal care, conservation, research, and beyond. We hope to inspire and develop future professionals as diverse as the aquatic world we care for.These opportunities are geared toward those that are new to the field and just starting to establish a career. They have the skills and knowledge, but not necessarily the real-world application.We welcome applications from all levels of experience, including those seeking career exploration or changes, gap year students, freshmen, sophomores, and those seeking first internships.Department Overview:
The Guest Relations Staffing Intern will play a vital role in supporting the Guest Relations Department by supporting the structures and processes for recruiting, hiring, and onboarding a large hospitality team while also elevating the importance of the guest experience to mission of Shedd Aquarium.This intern will gain real world experience utilizing an applicant tracking system, a structured approach to problem solving, real-time auditing and adapting and best practices for staffing a high volume/fast paced service environment. The intern will be provided one-on-one development and time with senior leaders of the department.Learning Objectives:

  • Develop an understanding of the application process at a high-volume, fast paced cultural institution.
  • Utilize established systems to track recruiting, onboarding, and retention.
  • Evaluate and research established and potential applicant pools.
  • Elevate strategic one-on-one and small group speaking and listening skills.

Responsibilities & Projects:

  • Demonstrate commitment to Shedd’s vision, mission and values
  • Develop an understanding of the department’s signature GUEST service framework.
  • Support department hiring process by sorting applications, scheduling screens and interviews, updating tracking.
  • Assists with maintaining staffing databases.
  • Contribute to new iterations of department training and tracking materials.
  • Help prepare training materials for new employee training days.
  • Assists with pulling metrics related to hiring, onboarding and training.
  • Organizing training files and presentations.
  • Assists and sits in on interviews.
  • Other projects as assigned

  • Strong verbal and in writing.
  • Able to research and analyze data.
  • Organized and able prioritize tasks.

  • Has great people skills and able to interact with people of all backgrounds, upwards, downwards, and sideways.
  • Familiar with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Able to work flexible hours including some early mornings, nights, and weekends as necessary, as well as walk/stand for extended periods of time.
  • Professional work ethic and demeanor.
  • Ideally an organized and meticulous leader, with strong interviewing and presentation
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Have a high school diploma or GED.

On-boarding
All interns attend one full day orientation. These are held in person on select Mondays from 9am-5pm. This is required, even if you will not normally be scheduled on Mondays.Time & Compensation:

  • This is a non-exempt, temporary position that pays $17 per hour
  • We anticipate this position will be scheduled for 24 hours per week for 12 weeks, pending business needs and individual performance.
  • Preferred schedule: Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday
  • Potential to assist with evening events during the summer season (i.e. Jazzin’ at the Shedd, House Party, and Ritmo Del Mar).
  • Set schedule based on intern availability.
