If you answered yes, then this may be the job for you!The Job Supervisor at Facilities Decommissioning & Environmental Remediation (FD&ER) faces a variety of daily challenges due to the diverse nature of facilities, resources, and responsibilities within the CRL Decommissioning Facilities branch. FD&ER is tasked with managing the decommissioning of facilities transferred to FD at Chalk River Laboratories (CRL) and Douglas Point.Reporting to the Project Manager of Facilities Decommissioning Program Execution, the Job Supervisor holds accountability for ensuring that all facilities, resources, and supporting groups operate and maintain compliance with Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) procedures and regulatory guidelines.Additionally, the Job Supervisor plays a critical role in reinforcing management’s expectations for safe work practices, addressing non-compliance consequences, and managing performance and time effectively at job sites.Moreover, the Job Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the completion of all necessary paperwork, maintaining records, and adhering to safety protocols. They provide strategic planning, oversight, and support for both routine and non-routine activities within affected lands and controlled areas to uphold the integrity of facility structures and operating systems.These responsibilities encompass a wide range of tasks including soil and groundwater characterization (such as boreholes, excavations, and sampling), site remediation (including the removal of impacted soils and buried waste items), analysis and repackaging of legacy waste, recovery operations, construction activities, partial dismantling, stripping of walls and ceilings, process equipment stripping, demolition work up to complete structures, and general site housekeeping.What will you be doing!The Job Supervisor is faced with a wide range of issues daily, as a result of the diverse group of facilities, resources and composition of the responsibilities of the CRL Decommissioning Facilities branch.The Supervisor’s duties include:

  • Review and Comment (R&C) on documents related to the CRL Decommissioning Facilities program;\
  • As Officer-in-Charge (OIC) or Emergency Steward of various facilities and/or areas, the Supervisor must lead facility and/or area response to emergencies, both internal and external;
  • Respond to calls during non-business hours and resolve emergency calls;
  • Work with Trades, Projects, FD HSSE support staff (Radiation Protection, Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Safety and Health, Environmental Protection) and other support groups to resolve problems and issues related to the remediation and decommissioning programs;
  • Maintain, update, and ensure CRL Decommissioning Facilities is following the preventive maintenance program and completing all maintenance, Storage-with-Surveillance (SwS), and compliance activities on time;
  • Supervise and delegate work to teams (up to 20 Staff);
  • Lead characterization and remediation activities in the field in multiple areas of any given job site, and possibly multiple job sites;
  • Lead site preparation activities related to future remediation activities;
  • Supervise the operation of heavy demolition equipment;
  • Supervise site reduction and packaging of radioactive/and non-radioactive demolition waste in accordance with Waste Management Plans (WMP’s);
  • Own and manage job sites, including perimeter barriers, signage, staff work practices, and traffic and pedestrian control;
  • Lead Plan of Day (POD) meetings with teams, ensure pre-jobs/post-jobs are completed;
  • Support the development and implementation of training;
  • Leading and or assisting in conducting interviews, goal setting performance management, career development, disciplinary and promotion actions for assigned staff;
  • Authorizing timesheets, leave approvals, vacation, and overtime;
  • Provide coaching as necessary;
  • Ensure adherence to field work plans and permits including hold points and signoffs prior to advancement.
  • Work with technical staff to resolve problems/issues to maintain a safe path forward approach to work execution.
  • Other duties as assigned by your manager.

What we are looking for:Skills/Abilities/Knowledge:

  • Demonstrated ability to perform under stress when confronted with emergency, unusual or hazardous conditions and to lead others in such conditions;
  • Be capable of obtaining Radiation Protection Group 3 certification within 3 months;
  • Familiarity with the Planning process and Computerized Maintenance Management System, CNL’s compliance programs would be an asset;
  • Knowledge and application of radiation protection principles, measurements, and contamination control.
  • A working knowledge of CNL’s practices, procedures, and organization would be an asset;
  • Good writing skills for report development, daily logs, OTOs (Order to Operate), RWPs (Radiological Work Plan), and work plans;
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings, specification sheets, and detailed instructions;
  • Good working ability with Microsoft suite of software;
  • Understanding of waste management principles and volume reduction methodologies;
  • Capable of producing plans and schedules;
  • Knowledge of the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act, Canadian Labour Code, and Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) would be an asset;
  • Knowledge of CNSC regulations and how they apply to decommissioning activities is an asset; and
  • Knowledge of the applicable codes associated with decommissioning a nuclear site and buildings and how to apply them when performing decommissioning activities is required is an asset.
  • Ability to be a certified Asbestos Abatement Supervisor.

Experience:

  • A minimum of 10 years’ experience working in a nuclear environment or equivalent;
  • Well-developed leadership and communication skills including the ability to develop a collaborative, team-oriented work environment in a unionized environment;
  • Familiar with emergency procedures and responsibilities;

Education:Secondary School graduation with Grade 12/13 advanced level with Ontario Academic Credits (OACs) in Math, Science and English or equivalentSecurity clearance eligibility required:Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom.Why CNL?Does working with a team across Canada to advance nuclear science and technology for a clean and secure world speak to you?
