The successful candidate will be involved in various tasks including Drosophila husbandry, cloning, generating CRISPR/Cas9 mutants and transgenic flies, conducting real-time PCR, and performing advanced genomic studies such as RNA-Seq and mass spectrometry. This position requires a detail-oriented individual with a strong background in molecular biology techniques and a passion for genetic research.Duties

  • Research study and experimental design. Implementation, analysis and dissemination of data including:
  • Develop, implement and analyze experiments that test Drosophila RNAi transgenic lines for phenotypes
  • associated with reduced or increased iron concentrations in various nutrient environments.
  • Prepare RNA and protein samples from Drosophila cultures.
  • Carry out genetic crosses to generate suitable genotypes that allow the analysis of loss- and gain-of-function phenotypes obtained via RNA interference, CRISPR/Cas9 or cDNA transgenes in live animals.
  • Prepare and analyze tissue samples using fluorescence and confocal microscopy.
  • Conduct real-time PCR experiments complete with data analysis.
  • Prepare tissue-specific RNA samples for cDNA library preparation to be used in Next–Generation—Sequencing.
  • Cloning and transgenic fly creation.
  • Design, implement and curate databases for cataloging lab reagents stocks, including DNA primers, Drosophila stocks and vector collection. Train staff and students in usage of these databases, and independently monitor new developments so that appropriate expansion of database content and scope is achieved.
  • Order reagents, instruments and services to maintain lab productivity. Independently interact and negotiate with sales representatives to ensure standard reagents are re-ordered on time.
  • Maintain and operate instruments, including confocal microscope, real-time PCR machine and general lab equipment.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor of Science is required, MSc in biology or biochemistry is preferred.
  • For applicants who hold a Bachelor of Science, a minimum of 3 years of experience as a laboratory technician is required.
  • For applicants who hold a Masters of Science; a minimum of 1 year of experience as a laboratory technician is required.
  • A background in molecular biology is essential to this role.
  • Experience with Drosophila, RNA-Seq, and analyzing large genomic datasets is considered an asset.
