The Learning Design Studio is an inter-professional team that delivers a wide variety of innovative educational design services including: educational technology enhancement and consultation, learning design, digital and physical materials design, educational multimedia development, development of web-based and eLearning content, visual communication design, graphic design, 2D and 3D digital and physical design, animation, and photography/audio/video production and post production.The Learning Design Studio is a ‘cost recovery’ group generating its budget through a combination of funds from the Vice Dean Education and project-generated revenue. Members of this team work collaboratively on a wide range of projects, while being responsible for meeting time-demands on components assigned to them. Each member contributes and is given responsibility based upon the knowledge and specialized skills they bring to each project. The successful candidate needs to be self-motivated, a team player, focused on accuracy and detail, and able to learn new tools, technologies, and skills rapidly based upon the projects they are involved in.Position SummaryThe Learning Design Studio is seeking a new Designer with a specialization in visual communication design to add to its team of health sciences education and learning designers. If you are excited about applying your design background to innovative health sciences education development, this role may be a good fit for you.The work of the Designer is varied and requires: the ability to think creatively and execute on creative design plans using aligned tools and software; analytical skills focused on detail and accuracy; exceptional interpersonal, collaboration, and communication skills; evidence of good organizational skills including design-related project management responsibilities within the team, and delivering within expected timeframes; and the ability and willingness to develop new design competencies.This position reports to the Manager, Office of Education in FoMD, and works closely with other Learning Design Studio team members, as they evaluate and deliver results on project activities. This position will include being collaboratively involved in all aspects of project development, including research and discovery interviews, development of initial design requirements, development of possible solutions through an iterative development process while closely involving the client. The Designer works closely with a variety of internal and external clients, faculty, staff, and subject matter experts.The Designer participates within a range of projects, all in some way related to medical/health education, including: educational technology development, educational multimedia development, learning design, development of eLearning content within a learning management system, visual communication design, graphic design, user experience design, modeling, prototyping, creating and production of 3D images, animations, printing, illustration, photography and video creation and editing, as well as writing, editing and researching. Many of these projects will involve development of web-ready content either for websites or within eLearning courses.Within this team, we are seeking a Designer to provide specialized skills related to visual communication design, information design, identity design, digital and physical materials design, and development of web-based educational content and multimedia.Duties

  • Work collaboratively with other members of the Design Team on a wide variety of cost-recovery projects requiring a high level of technical knowledge and analytical skills. This work relies on accuracy and detail under pressure of deadlines
  • Projects the Designer is responsible for will include both the planning and the production of materials for education such as:
  • Visual communication design (graphic design, identity design, typography, writing, layout design, creating digital or print assets while adhering to branding guidelines when needed)
  • Educational multimedia design including photo/video/audio, animation production, and editing
  • Creation and production of digital and physical materials
  • Development of web-based content and educational websites
  • Prototyping: creation of physical or digital models/samples/prototypes to a range of fidelity
  • Creation and production of 3D images, printing, animations; 2D images and animations; paper-based learning tools; design and production of products, as well as being involved with the development of project design brief documentation.
  • Support the project lifecycle including conduct initial research and discovery interviews, followed by an iterative development process closely involving the Faculty member or client; recommend resources required to execute a production plan; provide project management and maintain project documentation related to the assigned project; follow up with SMEs; ensure quality assurance expectations are met
  • Utilize current accepted design practices and tools in the development of both physical or digital models/samples/prototypes, to a range of fidelity as required by each project stage or outcome requirement
  • Seek, learn, implement new tools and software applications as required by project deliverables
  • Because of the nature of Studio projects, a determined attitude and independent learner with good oral communication, research, writing and editing skills is a requirement. In addition to the Design Team involvement, the Designer will interact with a wide variety of Subject Matter Experts within the Faculty, university and wider public, in the development of specialized design solutions
  • The Designer will use their exceptional research, development, and interpersonal skills to: develop working relationships with internal and external service providers regarding software application troubleshooting, maintenance, and enhancements; keep up to date on emerging industry best practices and tools which may positively impact the Studio team’s processes and systems; recommend process and workflow strategies to address changes in tools and technology and suggestions for innovations; participate in environmental scans and/or reports on project and design initiatives related to emerging priorities in the Faculty
  • Participate and facilitate meetings with the Studio Team, Faculty, clients, and other stakeholders
  • Model excellence in professional practice by staying up to date with industry trends, best practices, design technology (software/hardware) and materials/processes

Minimum Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in Design, Visual Communication Design, Communications
  • 2-3 years experience working in a post-secondary environment
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new skills and tools quickly in support of project deliverables
  • Ability to think creatively and design, prototype, refine and deliver design-related products
  • Ability to visually and physically communicate concepts as well as project findings (sketches, storyboards, maps, diagrams, models)
  • Experience maintaining, designing, and developing websites (using tools such as WebFlow, Cascade, or similar Content Management Software)
  • Demonstrated experience using design software for digital or physical outputs, such as Adobe Suites, Illustrator, InDesign, Figma
  • Demonstrated experience using photo, video, and audio editing software, such as Premiere Pro, After Effects, Photoshop
  • Familiarity documenting design knowledge and decisions, for example, through writing design briefs and field notes
  • Demonstrated technical and functional writing skills; experience writing for a variety of audiences and purposes is an asset
  • Ability to prioritize work, meet deadlines, and complete detail-oriented work, while adhering to required guidelines, standards, or policies
  • Ability to work in cross-functional teams
  • Solution-focussed, dependable
  • Demonstrates innovative approaches to solving educational and design problems in higher education
  • Stays up to date on current methods and approaches

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in health professions education is an asset
  • Instructional design or curriculum development background is an asset
  • Experience using collaboration and communication tools such as Google Suite, Figma, and Miro is an asset
  • Experience with project management methodologies, and process improvement strategies (in the areas of health sciences education, educational technology and/or design)
