The position develops, implements and evaluates activities and programs that convey information to new students and their families about TRU programs and services in order to support student’s personal, academic and social adjustment to the institution. The Learning Strategist, Orientation & Transition works in strong collaboration across the Faculty of Student Development team to both lead and support teams of student staff and volunteers and works independently to complete assigned duties. Special project work to support student success and retention, as assigned, is an important part of the position, and this position is accountable for coordinating projects to completion. Workloads may fluctuate and alter to meet the demands and needs of students.MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES * Develops and coordinates innovative and responsive programs and services such as TRU Orientation, transitions programming, that align with both the Faculty of Student Development and TRU’s Strategic Plan goals.

  • Contributes to the evaluation and assessment of orientation and transition initiatives by collecting and analyzing data.
  • Leads cross-campus orientation and transition committee charged with aligning programs and initiatives to support student orientation and transition to the institution.
  • Communicates orientation and transition initiatives and programs clearly to students, staff, faculty, parents and departments using various forms of media, including the web, newsletters, social media and print .
  • Designs, organizes and facilitates presentations and workshops related to students’ personal, social and academic adjustment to the institution.
  • Coordinates, prepares and maintains documentation, records and reports, including related budget and expense requirements.
  • Supports the recruitment, training and supervision of student employees (e.g. co-op and work study) and volunteers.
  • Monitors risk for student events and implements TRU’s emergency standards and procedures.
  • Manages confidential information for student employees and students and abides by the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act requirements as set out in TRU’s policies concerning privacy.
  • Maintains currency in student development and mentorship theory and practices.
  • Designs, updates and distributes marketing materials for new-to-TRU students.
  • Provides one-on-one coaching advice and support to students about the transitions process, including but not limited to study skills, time management, etc.
  • Related special project work as assigned.

Manager, Student ExperienceQUALIFICATIONSEDUCATION:

  • Bachelor’s degree in education or related field

EXPERIENCE:

  • Three years’ experience working with students; including:
  • Experience with program development and program management
  • Experience with one-to-one coaching and follow-up with students
  • Experience with student supervision, such as planning, scheduling, monitoring, and handling difficulties

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE OR ABILITIES RELATED TO THE JOB

  • Knowledge of the field of leadership development, student development and related literature and research an asset
  • Ability to plan ahead, anticipate problems and meet deadlines efficiently
  • Ability to communicate effectively to a culturally diverse audience, both verbally and in writing, including strong interview, listening and interpreting skills
  • Ability to organize events, lead promotion activities and coordinate and support student development programs
  • Ability to establish priorities, organize, schedule and report out in a timely manner
  • Ability to manage and coordinate multiple tasks and tasks of others
  • Ability to design and deliver training and developmental or skill-building workshops
  • Advanced computer knowledge, including word processing and familiarity with Word, PowerPoint and Excel
  • Demonstrated knowledge of digital software systems such as Moodle, CRM, Canva and social media

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • General office conditions; sitting at a desk or computer for extended periods of time
  • Working with students of varying abilities, needs and personalities
  • Irregular contact with parents and families
  • Some off-campus travel
  • May be required to lift up to 20lbs
