The incumbent will leverage their deep knowledge and experience in commercialization and technology transfer to harness the College’s resources to support improved commercialization outcomes for regional entrepreneurs, SMEs, and academic researchers. The Manager will work closely with Intellectual Property Ontario (IPON) to provide connections and referral to Provincial resources and ensure that the commercialization services offered by GBC are aligned with the priorities of the government and related agencies. The Manager will also work in close collaboration with staff and leadership of ORI.Key Responsibilities:

  • Establish and accountable for an intake process to develop a pipeline of regional entrepreneurs and SME’s who could benefit from commercialization services and support offered by the College and/or IPON with particular focus on priority sectors of advanced manufacturing, artificial intelligence, and digital transformation.
  • Build strong, sustainable relationships with industry, community, startGBC and local academic partners (particularly Technology Transfer Offices) as well as relevant industry associations and other ecosystem partners to support the Commercialization Hub’s mandate.
  • Develop and report against an annual strategic plan.
  • Liaise with IPON for the purpose of providing referrals and developing a deep understanding of IPON services and supports to enable effective amplification.
  • Accountable for the development of standardized agreement templates to address ownership, licensing and transfer of IP generated because of collaborative research and innovation projects.
  • Accountable for work done directly with SMEs on their commercialization plans.
  • Accountable for the initiation, execution, and successful completion of commercialization projects in ORI and ensuring that project deliverables are met in accordance with collaborator expectations, funder guidelines, and College policies.
  • Responsible for negotiating, committing and disbursing funds and delivering the commitment on behalf of the College (both in terms of funding and other project-related deliverables).
  • Responsible for recruiting, hiring, and managing direct reports and student employees.
  • Ensure staff have the training, guidance and support required to execute their roles efficiently and effectively.
  • Effectively assign staff workloads and allocate fiscal and physical resources, as appropriate.
  • Provide technical and project management guidance and expertise to project teams.
  • Complete performance management review process for staff ensuring annual goals and development plans is established, as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Educational and Experience Requirements:

  • Master’s Degree from a recognized post-secondary institution is required.
  • Minimum of seven (7) years’ work-related experience or similar experience required.
  • Incumbent must have significant experience in commercialization and/or technology transfer.
  • Experience in a post-secondary education institution is an asset.
  • Experience with creating, filing, and/or managing intellectual property in Canada or the United States.
  • Experience in project management and team leadership including hiring, training, mentoring and managing performance issues.
