What does the role look like?

As an R&D Manufacturing Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in the industrialization and development of innovative composite manufacturing processes and products, taking them from R&D to full-scale production. You will drive R&D activities, troubleshoot issues during the industrialization phase, and participate in manufacturing readiness level (MRL) assessments.

This is a fantastic opportunity to join a company at a critical juncture within its Manufacturing Engineering department, contributing directly to its continued success and innovation.

What will your day-to-day responsibilities include?

  • Develop and refine composite manufacturing processes, ensuring all findings and changes are well-documented. This includes a hands-on approach where necessary and effective reporting of results.

  • Design complex tooling, jigs, and fixtures to support the development of new parts and innovative manufacturing methods.

  • Troubleshoot issues and mitigate risks encountered during the industrialization of manufacturing processes.

  • Lead MRL progression and development, presenting updates and progress to key stakeholders at critical project milestones.

  • Collaborate closely with the R&D engineering team to ensure the manufacturability of new products, participating actively in design for manufacture (DFM) reviews.

  • Engage in continuous improvement initiatives for the R&D cell, including participation in 5S audits and other lean activities.

What will you bring to the role?

Essential skills:

  • Proven experience in developing manufacturing processes, ideally within the composites industry (e.g., resin transfer moulding, filament winding, braiding).

  • Strong background in solving manufacturing challenges that arise during the industrialization phase.

  • Strong communication skills, both written and oral.

Desirable skills:

  • Completion of a recognized technical apprenticeship is advantageous.

  • Working knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, including the ability to produce technical drawings.

  • Demonstrable experience in a manufacturing engineering environment, ideally within aerospace or automotive sectors.

  • Knowledge of process capability analysis and practical experience in using these tools to improve manufacturability.

  • Hands-on experience planning and executing experiments, including Design of Experiments (DOE).

  • Experience specifying and procuring production equipment.

  • Awareness of both metallic and composite machining processes.

  • HNC/HND (or equivalent) in a relevant Manufacturing Engineering discipline, with a bachelor’s degree preferred.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and CAD software (Siemens NX preferred).
