Purpose/Summary:The Marine Safety & Culture Superintendent is a part of the Marine Safety and Standards (MSS) Department and is responsible for supporting safety, quality, organizational benchmarking, and cultural transformation programs/initiatives. This role is the primary point of responsibility for compliance with required Every Mariner Builds a Respectful Culture (EMBARC) Standards and cadet shipping. The Assistant Manager, Marine Safety & Culture will support emergency response efforts as directed and serve as the required designated Sexual Assault / Sexual Harassment (SASH) Point of Contact. The Marine Safety & Culture Superintendent will actively champion a safe and positive workplace of dignity and respect for all.Key Responsibilities:Support company compliance efforts, shipboard and shoreside, with International Safety Management Code (ISM) requirements, and ensures the company is compliant with shipboard and shoreside EMBARC Cadet Shipping requirements; maintains documentation and records associated with demonstrating compliance with these standards as necessary or directed.Participate in annual EMBARC audits (shipboard/shoreside as necessary), ensuring non-conformities/observations are addressed in a timely manner and reporting the same to MARAD (US Maritime Administration); track trends in EMBARC non-conformities and observations, escalate trends to management where appropriate.Establish positive relationships with cadets that facilitate trust, coordinate cadet embarkations and conduct cadet familiarizations and required check-ins for cadets onboard.Maintain repository of relevant shipboard training materials, posters and supporting documents.Responsible for implementing, coordinating, and delivering various fleet training initiatives related to shipboard safety and culture.Act as the primary designated SASH point of contact (EMBARC III.2), reliable 24×7 point of contact for SASH incident support and response.Liaise with MARAD, USMMA (United States Merchant Marine Academy), USCG (United States Coast Guard), industry advocate groups, and other US Flag Operators, working closely with them to assure continued compliance with EMBARC and other SASH Prevention requirements.Review cultural survey responses, escalating notable feedback to management as necessary; track trends in survey responses and heatmap cultural trends on a quarterly basis.Review monthly shipboard safety committee meeting minutes and escalate notable feedback to responsible stakeholder as necessary (e.g., Ship Superintendent, Safety Manager, etc.)Collaborate with Safety Manager in administration of Fleet Safety Observation and Safety Award Program.Participate in company ISM Audits as required demonstrating compliance with ISM and EMBARC Standards as necessary.Responsible for implementing and overseeing the annual Master’s Review process in accordance with ISM 12. Prepare and facilitate annual master’s review in accordance with documented procedures and generate results/feedback report for input to annual Management Review.Ensure internal ISM audits (IA) and inspection findings are reported to the company per procedure for implementation, follow through, and status tracking to closure of corrective actions.Support Technical Organization in the scheduling and tracking of internal technical inspections (TI) and ensure findings are reported to the company per procedure for implementation, follow through, and status tracking to closure of corrective actions.Review and track IA and TI findings, non-conformities, and observations to identify emerging trends, escalate identified trends across organization.Assist with administration of certificates, internal audits, navcom, and/or other duties as directed.Compile and analyze internal safety statistics (e.g., crew morale, safety culture, survey feedback, near misses, lost time incidents, accident severity, etc.) to identify loss trends and opportunities for improving workplace safety and shipboard culture.Generate monthly operational and safety statistic benchmarking reports, and submit them to relevant stakeholders as directed (e.g., Maersk, Hoegh, etc.), such as: monthly overdue SMR report, containership safety forum report, monthly MSS key performance indicator (KPI) reports, monthly work/rest hour performance reports, statistical performance reports, etc.Liaise with management and various internal departments to obtain and compile information for goal setting and development of the Maersk Line Limited (MLL) internal scorecard, responsible for developing the MLL scorecard and regularly communicate progress of organizational KPIs across the organization.Liaise with management and various departments to obtain and compile information to develop the MLL Fleet Newsletter, finalize and distribute the Fleet Newsletter as directed by management.Support emergency response efforts as directed.Supports commitment to safety and other selected company standards and certifications.Performs other position related duties as specified by management.Position Specifications:Education and ExperienceBachelor’s degree in marine transportation, business administration, data analytics, engineering, or related field from an accredited institution required or Associate’s degree in a related field with minimum 2 years of relevant maritime experience.Minimum 2 years of experience in business, processes, systems, and contingencies related to safety, quality specifications, or compliance.Experience in the maritime or shipping industry is highly preferred.Technical Skills and Competencies RequiredSuperior writing and documentation skills, excellent communication skillsA decisive individual who possesses a “big picture” perspective and is well versed in systems.Drives for results and success, conveys a sense of urgency and pursues issues to closure, persists despite obstacles and opposition.Exceptional analytical and problem-solving abilities.Enhanced analytical and problem-solving skills with an interest in tackling challenges through innovative solutions, maximizing the use of resources available.Ability to act as a change agent and positively influence organizational behavior and thinking on safety without direct authority.Good relationship building / interpersonal and influencing skills – ability to work with diverse groups, to include senior level executives, union leaders and government officials and gain group consensus.Good working knowledge of MS Office Products (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, TEAMS) and the ability to quickly grasp and work with new systems.Working knowledge of ISM and associated regulatory compliance requirements is preferred.Knowledge of Operational Risk Management and Behavioral based Safety preferred.Learning Description: The key skills and competencies the incumbent should learn in this position.Maersk Culture and ValuesMaersk Operations / StructureApplicable Maersk systems and processesChange Management40-hour Victim Assistance Training Online provided by the Office for Victims of Crime Training & Technical Assistance CenterVictim Advocate TrainingMicro aggression consciousnessProvisional NACP training levelDesignated Person Ashore (DPA) TrainingISM Internal AuditorRoot Cause AnalysisISPS (International Ship & Port Security) Code TrainingApplicable Regulatory requirements and trendsNetworking and CollaborationInfluencingConflict resolution and NegotiationAnalysis and Problem SolvingTravel Requirements: SomePhysical Demands & Work Environment:The physical demands and work environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
