- Conduct laboratory tests. It is expected that, over a period of time, Materials Technologists obtain competency in all tests conducted in the laboratory.
- Know and be comfortable with standards codes such as ASTM, ASME, CSA, NACE, API, AWS.
- Awareness of all testing results and how they apply to the given code. Technologists are expected to flag failed test results to their supervisor.
- Learn to personally organize their own daily testing tasks based on the workflow and due dates given to them.
- Maintain Laboratory and personal work area in a clean and professional manner.
- Work within the rules of the ISO 17025 quality program.
- Maintain Test equipment and conduct scheduled maintenance on test equipment.
- Work with customers and co-workers to improve work processes and resolve technical issues.
- Follows all company health, safety and environmental policies.
- Follows all Quality system protocols and reports any discrepancies to the Supervisor.
- May be assigned and coordinate special or ad hoc projects as needed.
QualificationsEducation:
- A post-secondary education (degree and/or diploma) in Materials Engineering Technology, Welding Engineering Technology or other related program is required.
Experience:
- Upon hiring, the Materials Technologist shall meet one of the following criteria for certification:
- Be registered with or eligible for registration with the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists of Alberta (APPEGA)
- Be registered with or be eligible for registration with the Association of Science and Engineering Technology Professionals of Alberta (ASET)
- This position requires a minimum of 3-5 years of relevant laboratory experience.
Technical Skills:
- Must be able to read, understand and follow work instructions in a safe, accurate and timely manner.
- Knowledge Image analysis operation / software considered an asset
- Candidates must be proficient in using various types of computer software (Word, Excel. PowerPoint & Outlook).
- Proven ability to manage and coordinate multiple projects in a fast-paced, highly professional environment.
- Candidates must demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills including grammar and composition.
- Ability to work well with others & independently.
- Proven time management skills and a strong attention to detail.
- Works well under pressure.
- Extended hours and shift work may be required from time to time.
- Travel to other SGS locations or client location may be required from time to time.
- Ensures full compliance with the company’s Health & Safety, Code of Integrity, and Professional Conduct policies.
- Good hand/eye coordination when handling samples & various equipment.
- Must use good judgment to identify and resolve problems on the job. When in difficulty refer problems to his/her supervisor for resolution.
- Intermediate level of creativity required in solving routine problems.
- Able to work well under pressure during high (peak) workloads and balancing conflicting demands of high volume versus the quality of results.
- The following technical skills are considered an asset:
- mechanical aptitude supported by background and experience
- instrumentation and control
- CAD
