Under general supervision, performs welding, machining and mechanical work associated with the maintenance of power plant equipment. Job requires working knowledge of the tools used in the maintenance of power plant equipment sufficient to perform a range of varied, non-routine activities. Procedures are established and a number of specific guidelines are available requiring judgment in locating and selecting the most appropriate methods, techniques and procedures to apply to specific cases. Solves routine or recurring problems and identifies and suggests solutions to more complex problems. Work is evaluated in progress and upon completion for accuracy and completeness in following instructions and established procedures. Regular contact with individuals at all levels in other work groups and outside the organization is required to obtain, clarify or provide information. May be required to work in a maintenance planning capacity on a rotational basis. Ability to support plant operations as needed and to perform work in which qualified.

Provides classroom and on-the-job training to others, as required.

Sets up, operates and maintains machine tools including engine lathes; milling machines; radial arm, standard and portable drill presses; saws; surface, pedestal and tool post grinders; shapers; sanders; keyseating machine presses; portable valve lapping and grinding equipment; portable honing equipment; portable hack saws; and precision drill sharpeners etc.

Performs oxyacetylene burning, welding, brazing, soldering and heating.

Operates oxyacetylene track burners and circle burners.

Performs air carbon arc and plasma arc cutting; shielded metal arc, gas metal (MIG), gas tungsten (TIG), resistance and plasma arc welding; heat tracing; and hard surfacing.

Maintains and overhauls heat treating equipment and metal arc welding units.

Sets up, operates, maintains and overhauls punch presses, hydraulic shears, hydraulic breaks, stud welding machines, power scaffolding and hydrostatic test equipment.

Troubleshoots welding equipment and performs welds on structural steel.

Performs lay out and fabrication tasks for metals and boiler tube bends.

Performs welding and cutting on containers.

Prepares reports and catalog information.

Maintains inventory, stores metals and removes broken fasteners.

Overhauls traveling screens, rotary and reciprocating air compressors, vacuum pumps, heat exchangers, air preheaters, fluid drives, steam turbine generators, sootblowers, valves, hydraulic systems, fans, valve operators, pumps, gas turbines, steam traps, gauge glasses, dampers and operating linkages, drive units, burners and air registers, dehumidifiers, expansion joints and the Amertap condenser cleaning system.

Performs shaft alignment, pipefitting, masonry and carpentry work and building maintenance.

Rigs and lifts equipment.

Installs and repairs plumbing and removes insulation.

Inspects and cleans boiler and boiler steam drum; performs boiler acid wash.

Uses specialized diagnostic equipment.

Unwires electric motors rated at 480 volts or less and solenoid switches.

Prepares metal for coatings and site for equipment installation.

Performs nondestructive metals testing, lubricates equipment, ties up fuel tankers, operates tool room.

Maintains tools and equipment in safe and proper working condition.

Conducts safety meetings and ensures that safety rules are enforced, safe work practices are encouraged and unsafe conditions and behaviors are corrected.

Ensures compliance with all environmental operating permit conditions.

Operates and maintains various construction equipment and vehicles, including vehicle combinations with gross vehicle weight ratings of 26,000 pounds or more such as bucket, derrick, or cargo trucks with cable or cargo trailers and semi-tractors with crane or lowboy trailers.

Issues safety clearances for maintenance of mechanical and electrical equipment and systems.

Operates switches and uses tools to places electrical equipment such as busses and breakers in and out of service and to test breakers.

Develops and maintains work packages for the preventive maintenance programs

Receives, codes, reviews and process new plant work orders using established planning guidelines

Initiates, prepares and processes documents to generate purchase requisitions and field orders for non stock material purchases

Follows up with vendors on materials requested but not received

Researches stock items to provide adequate manufacturers part information in inventory management system

Resolves recurring inventory problems and discrepancies, such as obsolete vendor part numbers, in conjunction with Inventory Control and Procurement personnel

Operates standard office equipment and uses required software applications.

Performs other job-related work as assigned.

Qualifications

OPEN REQUIREMENTS:

High School diploma or equivalent and a minimum of four (4) years work experience in mechanical maintenance of an industrial facility such as a power plant, pulp and paper mill, brewery plant, chemical plant, or auto assembly plant, military installation or similar type facility in an electrical maintenance capacity.

OR

High school diploma or equivalent and successful completion of State of the Florida Maintenance Mechanic Apprenticeship program per certificate issued from the State of Florida Department of Labor containing a unique certificate number.

To be considered for employment, the applicant will be required to pass a Physical Abilities Test that is representative of the physical demands of the job.

PROMOTIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

All regular JEA employees who have successfully completed the JEA Mechanical Technician Apprenticeship Program will be promoted without examination.

LICENSING/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION:

  • A valid drivers license may be required prior to employment and may need to be maintained during employment in this classification. Varies by Assignment.
  • A structural welding certification from the American Welding Society may be required within sixty (60) days of employment in this class and must be maintained during employment in this classification.

This position requires that employees be in compliance with JEA procedure HUMR – Screening Personnel Risk Assessments (pre-hire for “FACTA” designation; pre-hire and recurring for “CIP” designations).

Unusual hearing or vision demands:

Identify and differentiate colors; maintain vision correctable to 20/40; normal field of vision and night vision; ability to hear within normal sound range; good depth perception. Ability to distinguish people and objects while wearing safety glasses clouded by extreme hot and cold conditions.

Other physical demands or notes:

Ability to pass a qualitative respirator fit test with ability to perform work while wearing a respirator without respiratory distress, works at heights and in confined spaces. Free of an irrational fear of noises; good manual dexterity; normal sense of balance and smell and range of motion.

  • JEA employees should not attempt to lift, pull or push a load in excess of 50 lbs. without assistance. Care should always be taken when lifting, pushing or pulling in an awkward position.
