The purpose of this internship is to support UNICEF’s Regional Media Hub, located in New Delhi. The Media Hub is an integral part of the Communication and Advocacy section of the UNICEF Regional Office for South Asia. This internship provides the selected candidate with exposure to the working environment of a multilateral organization and the opportunity to learn more about how UNICEF uses media in service of child rights. The UNICEF internship programme also provides students the opportunity to enhance their education experience and professional networking through practical work assignments. In turn, UNICEF benefits from qualified students or recent graduates specialized in the latest media practices.

The successful candidate will support on the following tasks:

  • Help to develop news notes, press releases, media messages, human interest stories, Q & A’s, talking points, and other media products.
  • Support in media monitoring to track results from press releases.
  • Provide support for media analysis of media trends.
  • Consolidate essential information into, for example, briefing notes.
  • Research on children’s issues pertinent to the region.
  • Scan media opportunities for the Regional Office and/or Country Offices.
  • Keep abreast of breaking news related to children.
  • Other tasks as needed, including supporting internal processes, research, Regional Office or Country Office projects.
  • Help to develop related advocacy and media plans and campaigns and regional messaging to further UNICEF’s regional advocacy priorities covering education, climate change, nutrition, and others.

Qualifications Or Specialized Knowledge/experience Required:

  • At least 18 years old and enrolled in an undergraduate, graduate or Ph.D. degree programme in journalism, communication, or related field, or have graduated from one within the past two years.
  • Background in communication, journalism, or similar discipline
  • Excellent academic performance as demonstrated by recent university or institution records.
  • Excellent oral and written skills in English.
  • Excellent copy writing and editing skills.
  • Proficiency in writing media messages, press releases and other media products.
  • Knowledge of media landscape in South Asia.
  • Demonstrated experience practising as a journalist through internships at media outlets is an asset.
  • Knowledge and creative skills in content creation, copy writing
  • Experience working in a developing and emergency environment is an asset.
  • Knowledge of children’s rights, public policy, international development and humanitarian issues is also an asset.
  • Well versed in the use of social media platforms.
  • Strong research and analytical skills, including the ability to distil lengthy and often complex content into brief summaries.
  • Ability to adapt to changing circumstances and be flexible in daily work.
  • Ability to work in a diverse environment and work independently under tight deadlines.
  • Knowledge of standard Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and sharing platforms such as SharePoint
  • No immediate relatives (e.g., Father, mother, brother, sister) working in any UNICEF office, and have no other relatives in the line of authority to which the intern will report.

The successful intern will be governed by the following conditions:

  • Status: Although not considered a staff member of UNICEF, the intern shall be subject to the authority of the Executive Director and the authority delegated by her to the Division Director and Heads of Offices. Interns are not entitled to the privileges and immunities accorded by member states to UNICEF’s officials and staff members.
  • Medical health and coverage: UNICEF accepts no responsibility for costs or fatality arising from illness or accidents incurred during the internship; therefore, the intern must carry adequate and regular medical insurance.
  • Confidentiality and publication of information: As intern, you will respect the confidentiality of information that you collect or are exposed to at UNICEF. No reports or papers may be published based on information obtained from UNICEF without the explicit written authorization by the Head of Office or Division Director.
  • Employment prospects: The UNICEF internship programme is not connected with employment and there is no expectancy of such. Interns cannot apply for posts advertised internally to UNICEF staff during the period of internship.
