DefinitionUnder immediate supervision, is responsible for performing routine clinical tasks in a City health clinic, community setting, or residential setting; performs related duties as required.Examples of Work(Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all of the duties that may be performed.)Draws blood specimens via venipuncture or finger stick; performs routine diagnostic tests such as EKGs, pregnancy tests, hemoglobin count, skin TB tests, and vision and hearing screens;Collects and prepares laboratory specimens;Performs injections under the physician’s supervision; dispenses prescribed medication and conducts direct observation to ensure the medication is taken;Sterilizes instruments; disinfects equipment; disposes of contaminated items according to proper procedures;Files and pulls records; prepares medical records from information provided by the health professional; reviews, separates, and purges medical record files according to directions from the health professional;Completes patient history form and takes chief complaint statement; obtains patient’s height, weight, and vital signs;Completes lab forms; delivers lab specimens to Columbus Public Health; maintains patient logs and lab results logs;Discusses available services with patients; explains treatment procedures;Explains the nature of the examination to the patients at the provider’s request; prepares patients for examinations; assists provider and nurse during the examinations;Instructs patients regarding proper preparation for tests ordered by the provider;Orders and maintains lab supplies and equipment;Maintains necessary supplies in the examination rooms; sets out and organizes lab supplies and other needed materials in preparation for clinic activities;Prepares X-rays for readings by doctors or radiologists;Greets patients; schedules appointments; performs routine clerical duties such as filing, answering telephones, preparing correspondence, typing, and data entry; completes insurance forms;Removes sutures and changes dressings;May perform clinical tasks in mass immunization clinics or other emergency response clinical operations;May communicate with potential and enrolled program participants who have limited English language skills;May be assigned to serve as a member of an Incident Command System (ICS) Team, or a similar public health response team which may include the conduct of operations on a 24/7 basis at remote locations, as per the applicable bargaining unit contract.Minimum QualificationsPossession of a Medical Assistant Certificate from an accredited institution, possession of an associate degree in Medical Assisting Technology, or one (1) year of experience working as a Medical Assistant.Some positions may require possession of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license.Positions allocated to this classification may require conversational proficiency in a language or languages other than English.Test/Job Contact InformationThe names of the applicants passing this administration of this exam will be used to create a NEW, OPEN COMPETITIVE, eligible list for this classification. If you are interested in having your name included on the new eligible list, you will need to apply for this exam within the filing period and successfully complete all phases of the testing process. Questions regarding this process can be directed to the Test Center at 614-645-7439.The examination process will consist of a Short Answer examination weighted 40% assessing knowledge of standard medical office and clinical procedures; a Training and Experience evaluation weighted 40%; and a computerized exam weighted 20% covering Microsoft Outlook and Word 2016/2019, and medical terminology.The exam is expected to be administered in September-October. Approved applicants will be notified by mail/email of their scheduled test date and time.All applicants must complete all phases of the testing process in order to receive a final score. The names of all candidates who pass this examination will remain on the eligible list for two years, unless the eligible list is replaced prior to or extended beyond the two years. If a candidate’s name is certified and the candidate is to be considered for employment, the hiring process will include one or more interviews, a criminal background check, and a pre-employment drug test.The certification process will be: Fixed Band
