CNL is looking for a new grad physicist with keen interest in using their hands-on experimental and computational modeling and analysis skills within the Safety and Security directorate.The successful candidate will carry out multi-disciplinary research to advance technology readiness level of passive and active radiation interrogation techniques for detection and characterization of radiological and nuclear (RN) materials. Functions and responsibilities can include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Contributing to and proposing projects on the development and implementation of methodologies and techniques applicable to detection and characterization of RN materials associated with nuclear security, safeguards, and arms controls areas
- Providing technical expertise and guidance to support deployment of CNL’s radiation detection techniques in an operational environment
- Applying improved methods, procedures, and standards to meet a high level of quality assurance
- Working with a team of scientists, engineers and technologists involved in radiation detection to achieve project deliverables and objectives
- Using both experimental and simulation methods to solve problems
- Developing simulations, algorithms, and procedures to support experimental work
- Writing in a timely manner and/or present the simulation and experimental results in technical reports, in peer-reviewed journals or presentations prepared for a committee or other forum as appropriate (e.g., national/international conferences/workshops)
- Communicating effectively with supervisors and peers, through status updates, technical research reports, and project presentations
- Ensuring compliance with safety, health, and CNL’s quality program requirements
- Other duties as assigned by your manager.
What we are looking for:Education
- PhD from a university of recognized standing, in Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Materials Science, Materials Engineering, or related field.
Experience
- Recent graduation from a university of recognized standing within the past twelve (12) months.
- Demonstrated experience (can include student work-terms and graduate research) in some of the following is required.
- Monte Carlo simulations for radiation detection system design and radiation dose estimation
- Working knowledge of at least one of these codes C, C++, MATLAB or Pytho
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of radiation detection and measurement methods through courses or work
- Familiarity with data acquisition systems
- Work carefully and safely with commitment to quality assurance
- Proven experience in applied research for internal or external customers
- Knowledge of nuclear/particle physics
- Affinity to solve mathematical problems and modelling
- Excellent organizational skills
- Ability to manage multiple and competing priorities
- Knowledge of analogue and digital signal procession
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Knowledge of research practices and principles
- Experience with proposal writing, data analysis and technical report writing
- Knowledge of quality assurance program is an asset but can be learned on the job
Security Clearance Eligibility Required
Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3-5 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom. This role is a fully onsite role that requires the employee to primarily work at CNL’s Chalk River Laboratory site, with only occasional opportunities to work remotely, if desired by the employee.
