Our Chalk River location is looking for an Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Specialist to support our Health, Safety, Security, Environment, and Quality Science and Technology Support branch (HSSE&Q S&T). • Participating in various OSH audit processes.
• Documenting/recording information: entering, transcribing, storing, and/or maintaining information in written or electronic form.
• Providing input to employee manuals, safety procedures and company policies, when appropriate.
• Communicating and providing information to supervisors, co-workers, and subordinates by telephone, in written form, e-mail, or in person.
• Participating and supporting both the Job Hazard Analysis process and it’s alignment to Integrated Work Control through field walk downs, hazard identification and providing recommendations to staff to control and mitigate risks.
• Other duties as assigned by your manager.

What we are looking for:

• Education

• Occupational Health and Safety Certificate/Degree along with CRSP (Canadian Registered Safety Professional) designation is desired. If no designation, then must be capable and willing to obtain within a reasonable period of time.
• Will be required to take CNL Radiation Protection Group 3 training.
• Experience

• Minimum 5 years of safety related and relevant experience. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in research/lab, industrial and highly technical environments.
• Strong background in Electrical and/or Chemical Safety would be considered an asset.
• Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Be able to function in an integrated work team model that brings together subject matter experts to create work plans for various projects.
• Demonstrates “safety first” attitude. Ensure activities are conducted with CNL, public and employee safety foremost in mind.
• Ability to maintain and grow safety knowledge including industry best practices and pending changes in legislation.
• Demonstrated interpersonal, communication (active listening, oral expression/comprehension) and training/presentation skills.
• Resource, observe, receive, and otherwise obtain information from all relevant sources.
• Ability to remember what is seen and heard for reporting; and
• Coordination and planning skills.
• Must possess a working level knowledge of occupational health & safety legislation relating to general research, laboratory and industrial environments.
• Knowledge in electrical safety principles and work practices would be considered an asset.
• Must have extensive working knowledge of specific federal (CLC) and provincial legislation (Ontario) that affects occupational health and safety within CNL.
• Knowledge of the CNL OSH Program would be considered an asset.
• A working knowledge of radiation protection principles would be an asset. Must be willing to undertake and successfully complete formal and on-the-job CNL Radiation Protection training relevant to this position.
• Industrial Hygiene operating instructions and procedures.
• Incident / Event investigation.
• Principles and practices of customer service; and
• Office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and applicable software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.
• Security Clearance Eligibility Required

• Level 2 Secret with SASC requires a minimum of 7 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States, and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat’s “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security.”

Working Conditions:

• Working schedule : Five (5) days per week, eight (8) hours per day for a forty (40) hour work week.
• Physically fit, able to be physically active (standing, walking) for up to 8 hrs a day. Able to manage stairs, ladders and other egress equipment to enter all site and building areas including confined space. Able to use personal protective equipment including a respirator.
• Primarily field work in various S&T Laboratories and Facilities in both radiologically active and non-active environments.
• Office work to prepare and provide formal assessments, reports and to approve documents as part of CNL and OSH processes.
