SummaryAmerican Conservation Experience, a nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the National Park Service, is seeking one member to contribute to projects alongside National Park Service Staff.For more information about ACE, please visit our website.Start Date: June 2025Estimated End Date: 20 weeks after start date*a 20-week minimum commitment is required *Location Details/Description: The National Park Service preserves many of the nation’s most important natural areas, historic sites, and outdoor recreation amenities for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations. Within the National Park Service, the Park Planning and Special Studies (PPSS) Division provides overall direction for general management planning for park units and coordinates special studies that evaluate the potential for adding new units to the national park system, national trails system, national wild and scenic rivers system, and national heritage areas program. PPSS Division staff also collaborate with National Park Service staff across the country to provide policy guidance, coordination, and project management support for unit management planning, special studies, strategic facility investment strategies, and preliminary transportation planning projects. For more information about the Park Planning and Special Studies Division, please visit the NPS website.This position is anticipated to be remote with most of the internship duties taking place at the intern’s place of residence or home office. Depending on DOI policies related to computer use or telework agreements, the intern may be required to report to a nearby National Park Service, Department of Interior, or other federal government office depending on geographic availability.Position Overview: This position will serve as a member of interdisciplinary teams supporting park planning and/or transportation planning projects across the national park system. The intern will assist NPS staff with park planning and/or landscape architecture projects by developing site plans, conceptual design renderings, mapping products, etc. to help national park staff make informed decisions about potential design improvements. This work will include collecting and synthesizing information related to park planning and transportation system planning as well as coordinating collaborative reviews of conceptual design proposals.This individual placement is meant to facilitate professional development and promotes exposure to land management agencies and networking with professionals. This could include gaining experience in different conservation fields and shadowing different work groups.Schedule: Monday through Friday with core hours of 9 am to 5pm in the intern’s time zone.Position BenefitsLiving Allowance: The ACE Member is expected to contribute ~40 hours/week and will receive a living allowance of $1,000/week to offset the costs of food and incidental expenses, dispersed bi-weekly.Public Land Corps Hiring Authority: Members serving under this agreement may be eligible for a federal hiring authority upon completion of their term of service and 640 hours of service. If the duration of a PLC-eligible term is not long enough for Members to accrue 640 hours of service (~16 weeks), the total hours served at the completion of the term may be eligible to be combined with hours accrued from another PLC-eligible term to meet the 640 hours requirement. PLC projects also include specific eligibility requirements such as age and citizenship. - Members must be a U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident, as required by U.S. government contracts.
- Proficiency is using software programs such as ArcGIS, Adobe, or AutoCAD to develop landscape layouts, concept designs, site plans, or other conceptual renderings for park improvement projects.
- Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner.
- Ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group.
- A current and valid form of ID (will be required to provide copies of ID’s upon hiring)
- Willing to undergo and must pass the required criminal history checks
- Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
- ACE Members will need to complete bi-weekly timesheets, beginning of term feedback forms, end of term evaluations and for longer terms, a mid-term evaluation.

Preferred:
- Competitive applicants for this position can hold or be pursuing a Bachelor’s degree and/or have relevant experience in subject areas such as Public Policy, Landscape Architecture, Construction Management, Civil or Environmental Engineering, Urban and Regional Planning, Historic Preservation, and/or Environmental Planning.
- Knowledge of transportation systems, planning principles, and project management.
- Ability and willingness to work independently and alongside a team.
- Deep interest in public lands, the National Park Service, and natural and cultural resource management.
Physical Demands, Work Environment and Working Conditions:
- Physical Demands: Requires frequent sitting, standing, walking, hiking, carrying, using hands to handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms, talking and hearing. Manual dexterity required for use of various tools, computer keyboard/mouse and other office equipment. Required to stoop, kneel, climb stairs, and/or crouch.
- Vision Requirements: Requires close, distance, peripheral and depth perception vision as well as the ability to focus.
- Weight Lifted or Force Exerted: Frequently moves up to 10 lbs., ability to move up to 25 pounds.
- Environmental: Mainly indoor, office environment conditions; indoor air quality is good and temperature is controlled.
- Noise Environment: Moderate noise such as in a business office with equipment and light traffic.
- Travel: This position may require domestic travel.
Environmental Conditions/Hazards: The ACE member(s) may encounter environmental conditions/hazards including extreme heat or cold, rocky terrain, swamp or wetland conditions, biting insects, and potentially dangerous wildlife.
