PhD in physical-chemistry (M/F): enzymatic treatment of biofilms
Offer DescriptionThis thesis is part of a major interdisciplinary project at the interface between soft matter physics, physical chemistry and biochemistry, involving various partners from Strasbourg, Paris and Le Mans. Based at the Institut Charles Sadron in Strasbourg, the project will involve regular exchanges with the other partners. The PhD student will be hosted in the ICS PECMAT team, in close interaction with PhD students/researchers and engineers from other research teams (PECMAT, M3, TSP) and platforms (InCa, Plamics, Carmac). The World Health Organization continues to alert the health sector to the emergence and proliferation of multi-resistant microbial strains to antibiotics. Bacterial resistance results in biofilm which are difficult to treat. In Europe, one in twenty patients will contract a nosocomial infection during their hospitalization, representing the sixth leading cause of death in hospitals. Specific treatment of mature biofilm is needed for wound treatment or for water distribution systems. The aim of the PhD project is to develop enzymatic solutions to treat bacterial biofilms. The project will be part of a larger interdisciplinary project at the interface of soft matter physics and biochemistry. More detailed information will be provided at a more advanced stage of the hiring process.Activities:
– Preparation of aqueous solutions of water-soluble enzymes and polymers
– Characterize the activity of enzymes in different environments
– Characterize the secondary structure of enzymes by infrared spectroscopy and circular dichroism
– Develop a model biofilm using natural polymers and characterize them by confocal microscopy
