Duties and Responsibilities

Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in the Office of the Director (OD), United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) in Vienna, Austria. The incumbent will work under the direct supervision of the Programme Management Officer, Partnerships, Office of Director UNOOSA .

The Office of the Director (OD) is responsible for supporting the Office’s overall direction, administration and management, leading external relations and public information activities, overseeing coordination and cooperation with entities involved in space-related activities, the maintenance of the United Nations Register of Objects Launched into Outer Space and the implementation of assigned partnerships, initiatives and activities, among which World Space Forum, Space for Women, Space Economy, Space for Youth, Space for Climate Action, Promoting Space Sustainability and Enhancing International Expertise in Registration of Space Objects. The internship is UNPAID and interns work five days per week (full time – 40 hours). Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background;

Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Prepare various written outputs of the Office, e.g. background papers, analytical and briefing notes, and sections of official reports and studies.
  • Support, as necessary, the implementation of outreach activities originating from the Office of the Director, capacity building initiatives, including Office’s public relations, outreach campaigns and public information activities.
  • Draft background notes, papers, factsheets, spreadsheets and other documents in support of the Office’s programme budget, fundraising activities and other administration obligations, including updating internal databases and other planning tools.
  • Prepare inputs for publications, draft speeches, statements and presentations for the Director to major global conferences and meetings of the United Nations and space-related entities, the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space and its subsidiary bodies.
  • Provide general administrative support, if needed.
  • Prepare monthly reports, summaries, meeting minutes, standard operating procedures and other management related outputs.
  • Perform other tasks as necessary

Qualifications/special skills

The basic education required is HS Diploma. Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

  • be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work. experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required.

Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Be computer literate in standard software applications; proficiency in preparing spreadsheets Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter

Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
