Org. Setting and Reporting

This position is located in the United Nations Global Compact Office (UNGCO), at United Nations Headquarters, New York. The incumbent reports to the Senior Programme Officer, Programmes, of the UNGCO. The United Nations Global Compact is the United Nations’ voluntary corporate sustainability initiative in the areas of human rights, labour, the environment, and anti-corruption. It revolves around ten universal principles drawn from four key international instruments in these areas. The Global Compact Office is the United Nations entity responsible for the overall management and coordination of the Global Compact initiative. It pursues two complementary objectives: (1) making the Global Compact and its principles part of business strategy and operations everywhere; and (2) facilitating cooperation among key stakeholders by promoting partnerships and collective action in support of United Nations, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the Programme Officer (Environment and Climate) will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Develops, implements and evaluates assigned programmes/projects on United Nations Global Compact’s environmental principles and climate change initiatives; monitors and analyzes programme/project development and implementation of United Nations Global Compact’s climate initiatives and partnerships; reviews relevant documents and reports; identifies problems and issues to be addressed and initiates corrective actions; liaises with the Executive Office of the United Nations Secretary-General, United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), United Nations Environment; and key stakeholders on environment and climate issues; ensures follow-up actions.
  • Performs consulting assignments, in collaboration with private sector, the United Nations, Global Compact Local Networks and strategic partners, by planning facilitating workshops, through other interactive sessions and assisting in developing the action plan on business and climate issues.
  • Researches, analyzes and presents information on environment and climate gathered from diverse sources.
  • Coordinates policy development, including the review and analysis of issues and trends, preparation of evaluations or other research activities and studies on private sector contributions towards the Paris Agreement on Climate Change and its interlinkages to the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development.
  • Generates survey initiatives; designs data collection tools; reviews, analyzes and interprets responses, identify problems/issues and prepares conclusions on the business uptake of environmental principles and global climate change commitments, such as the science-based targets.
  • Organizes and prepares written outputs, e.g. draft background papers, analysis, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications across environment, climate change and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
  • Provides substantive backstopping to consultative meetings, conferences, etc., to include proposing agenda topics, identifying participants, preparation of documents and presentations for United Nations Global Compact flagship events and environment focused conferences.
  • Initiates and coordinates outreach activities with key stakeholders to mobilize business to advance environment and climate issues; conducts training workshops, seminars, etc.; makes presentations on a range of climate change focused topics including mitigation, adaptation, nature and interlinkages with inequalities and SDGs.
  • Leads and/or participates in key events related to environment and climate change including United Nations Global Compact’s contributions to the annual COP/CMP United Nations Climate Change Conferences and key United Nations high-level meetings on environment issues.
  • Coordinates activities related to budget funding (programme/project preparation and submissions, progress reports, financial statements, etc.) and prepares related documents/reports (pledging, work programme, programme budget, etc.).
  • Performs other duties, as required.

Education

  • An Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent degree) in environmental science, management, economics or a related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience

  • A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in project/programme management, or project/programme administration or related area is required.
  • Experience working with businesses/corporates on environment and climate change is required.
  • Experience with corporate sustainability as it relates to the collaboration between the private and public sector is required.
  • Experience managing strategic alliances and outreach is desirable.
  • Experience with resource mobilization is desirable.

Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another United Nations official language is desirable.
