- Drive and operate the utility controls of flanged wheel railroad repair equipment to perform a specialized segment or limited range of railroad maintenance.
- Rail alignment on straight sections of track and, with the guidance of a higher-grade worker, on superelevated track
- Operate ballast regulators to dig, move, pile, and spread ballast.
- Operate rail or track liner vehicles to align, space, and surface straight track and simple curves.

- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs in the regular performance of duties.
- This is a Term position scheduled to last 2 years. A term position may be extended to a maximum of eight years depending upon the needs of management. This cannot be made permanent.
- Term employment is subject to a one-year trial period. Employees serving a trial period can be removed with limited appeal rights.
- This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 5% of the time.
- This position requires the employee to use personal protective equipment provided by the employer.
- This position requires the incumbent to complete the Railroad Safety Course within 30 days of being appointed to this position and attend annual Railroad Safety refresher course.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.

I have the ability to perform common Railroad Maintenance Vehicle Operator duties for railroad maintenance vehicles. I can drive railroad maintenance vehicles; and perform maintenance on railroad maintenance vehicles such as checking fluids, adding fluids, and inspecting utility systems for proper operations. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. – Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
- PHYSICAL EFFORT: Moderate to heavy physical exertion is required in operating machines and tools used on track maintenance and in loading and unloading track materials (ties, rail, switch parts and other hardware). Operators also typically lift and move heavy items weighing 80 pounds and more. All lifts over 50 pounds will be assisted with a two person lift or using a mechanical handling equipment lifting device. The two persons lift limit is 100 pounds and will only be used for single event, non-routine lifts.
- WORKING CONDITIONS: The operator is exposed to a wide range of weather, and temperature conditions, high noise levels, fumes and odors from fuel, exhaust, lubricants, creosote, and possible accidents.
