Job description

Our Chalk River location is looking for a Research and Development Technologist to support our Advanced Reactor Materials and Chemistry Branch. If you see yourself working in our In-Reactor & High Temperature Materials Testing section, performing experimental research involving stress, temperature, corrosion and irradiation effects and high temperature materials testing to assess the degradation of candidate materials identified for small modular reactors (SMRs) and Generation IV (Gen IV) reactor concepts, then apply today!What will you be doing!

  • Executing high temperature laboratory experiments, including:
  • Selecting, specifying, recommending, planning, designing and set-up of experimental systems, for example, for high temperature creep, creep crack growth, fatigue and creep-fatigue tests
  • Calibration, preventive maintenance and troubleshooting of test machines and related equipment
  • Conducting experiments and generating mechanical test data according to plan
  • Interpretation, storage and documenting of laboratory results
  • Programming data acquisition systems,
  • Interfacing with branch professional staff, collaborators, and commercial customers
  • Providing advice to meet project objectives
  • Developing and maintaining experimental facilities for performing mechanical tests in controlled environments (chemistry, temperatures up 1000 oC)
  • Performing periodic handling and processing of small samples of radioactive materials
  • Researching and implementing state of the art equipment, cutting-edge instrumentation and data acquisition techniques and apply relevant techniques to experimental programs
  • Defining requirements for procurement and/or manufacture of equipment and components for experiments
  • Preparing job hazard analysis documentation
  • Playing an active role in Branch and Section safety initiatives
  • Other duties as assigned by your manager.

What we are looking for:

  • Education
  • Graduation from a recognized institute of advanced technology or equivalent formal education, preferably with a specialization in mechanical engineering technology, materials engineering technology, materials sciences, engineering, machining or related discipline. OR
  • Secondary School Graduation Diploma or equivalent and more than 3 years of pertinent experience or the equivalent in experience, additional education and training
  • Experience
  • 3 to 5 years’ relevant experience mechanical testing, instrumentation, data acquisition is considered an asset.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • A sound knowledge of computers including: using and programmable data acquisition systems and processing of scientific data.
  • A demonstrated commitment to safety, especially when dealing with high temperature testing, radioactivity and energized systems is absolutely essential.
  • A proven track record for producing high quality work and the ability to communicate data.
  • The ability to work in a team environment with good oral and written communication skills is absolutely essential, as is the ability to work to schedule.
  • Practical work experience in some combination of material testing, analytical sciences, scientific instrumentation, and designing experimental apparatus is required.
  • A strong working knowledge of the maintenance and use of mechanical testing equipment is essential.
  • Prior experience in materials science, in-situ measurement techniques, scientific instrumentation (such as thermocouples, LVDTs), welding, LabView, and working with systems involving elevated temperatures is required.
  • Experience in sectioning, mounting, grinding, polishing and etching metal specimens would be an asset.
  • General knowledge of materials degradation phenomena, creep and fatigue would be beneficial.
  • Security Clearance Eligibility Required
  • Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3-5 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat’s “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security.”

Working Conditions:

  • Occasionally may be in hazardous environments that require wearing appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Work in active laboratories requires high vigilance to alarms, lights, and signals as a safety requirement.
