Centre for the Climate Change and Social Transformations (CAST)Cardiff University School of Psychology is seeking to appoint a Research Associate to conduct qualitative analyses and research relating to CAST’s work on a public engagement and visioning toolkit and embedding social science expertise into policy making, and contribute to the overall research performance of CAST, the School and Cardiff University. The successful candidate will join the CAST research team in the School of Psychology at Cardiff University and work closely with Prof Wouter Poortinga and other team members on CAST’s Theme 1 projects.The Centre for Climate Change & Social Transformations (CAST) is funded by the ESRC, with core partners Cardiff University, the University of Bath, Manchester University, University of East Anglia, and Climate Outreach. The Centre is a global hub for understanding the profound changes required to address climate change. At its core, is a fundamental question of enormous social significance: how can we as a society live differently – and better – in ways that meet the urgent need for rapid and far-reaching emission reductions? The Centre focuses on people as agents of transformation in areas of everyday life that impact directly on climate change. We work across multiple scales (individual, community, organisational, national and global) to identify and experiment with various routes to achieving lasting change in these challenging areas. This research post will be embedded within Theme 1 (visioning) which aims to understand possible and preferred visions of future low-carbon societies. To pursue excellence in research and to inspire others to do the same.MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Research

  • To conduct qualitative analyses and research relating to the development and trialling of a toolkit that brings together resources on deliberative and visioning methods, and research and trial different approaches for embedding social science expertise and data into policy decision-making.
  • To contribute to the overall research performance of CAST, the School and Cardiff University
  • To develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research including research funding proposals
  • To write up the results of research and contribute to the publication of results in high-quality peer-reviewed academic literature.
  • To produce other measurable research outputs, including policy briefings, and research proposals.
  • To attend and/or present at conferences/seminars/meetings at the local, national and international level, as required.
  • To liaise with other project members and participate in meetings.
  • To undertake administrative tasks associated with the research projects, including the planning and organisation of the projects, the implementation of procedures required to ensure accurate and timely reporting, and the archiving of data in established repositories.
  • To review and synthesise existing research literature within the field.
  • To participate in School and CAST Centre research activities.
  • To build and create networks both internally and externally to the University, to explore future research requirements, and share research ideas for the benefit of research projects.

Qualifications and Education
1. Postgraduate degree at PhD level (or nearing completion / submission) in a relevant quantitative social science discipline (e.g., environmental psychology) or relevant industrial experienceKnowledge, Skills and Experience
2. Proven expertise in generating, analysing and interpreting qualitative social science data (e.g., interviews, focus groups, co-design workshop, roundtables).
3. Experience in conducting interdisciplinary environmental research and/or consultancies with policy makers, community groups and/or third sector organisations.
4. Knowledge of current status of research in the field of public engagement with climate change and/or climate change policy design
5. Proven ability to publish in national/international peer reviewed journals and/or conference proceedings.
6. Knowledge and understanding of competitive research funding to be able to develop applications to funding bodies.Communication and Team Working
