Located on the unceded territory of Anishinabé-Algonquin people, in the heart of downtown Ottawa, it contributes significantly to the economy, culture and quality of life of Canada’s Capital.Duties: Reporting to the Head, Research Support (Scholarly Communication and Data) the Research Librarian (Data) provides data services that support research, scholarship, and learning activities in alignment with the goals and priorities of the Research Services division and the broader research mission of the University of Ottawa. Working in an adaptive, team-based environment, the incumbent is responsible for a broad scope of work. This work includes providing specialized expertise associated with the provision of data services, which may be achieved by meeting with users for consultations, developing self-learning tools and documentation, designing and delivering instruction, and contributing to the curation and management of the Library’s data collections. The incumbent is a member of an evolving organization that emphasizes service quality, innovation, and teamwork.The Research Librarian (Data) is responsible for the following work and activities, in support of the goals and priorities of the Research Services division and carries out these activities in a team-based environment, using their professional judgement and knowledge.Contribute specialized expertise and skills to support research by facilitating access to diverse data collections, including, but not limited to those requiring mediation for access. Contribute to and share responsibility for the assessment and administration of third-party contracts and projects, including, but not limited to, Eurostat, CIHI, ICPSR, and DLI. This work may include considering ethics, security, infrastructure, software, licensing, and related policies. Contribute to and share responsibility for the development and operation of data services including research data management. Provide in-depth consultations for individuals and groups on resources, services, best practices, and tools related to the acquisition, use and management of data. Design and provide instructional services to guide faculty and students in the use of the Library’s resources, tools, and services in order to promote and support data literacy within the University community. Identify and pursue opportunities to partner with University of Ottawa colleagues on this work as appropriate. Contribute to the development of tutorials, guides, documentation, and other self-learning tools to enable the effective discovery, access, and use of data resources and services. Serve as a resource person for data services for those affiliated with the University, including students, faculty, staff, and Library colleagues within the department, and in other departments as appropriate. Cultivate relationships with these users and colleagues in order to identify and respond to ongoing needs, as well as to support and promote the integration of data services and data literacy. When appropriate, cultivate relationships with data vendors and other supplying organizations in order to respond to ongoing needs, as well as to support and promote the integration of data services and data literacy. Evaluate, develop, curate, and coordinate the Library’s diverse data collections, and related documentation, in accordance with collections management policies and practices and in collaboration with relevant Library colleagues. Contribute to Library policies for data storage, metadata standards, access, security, as well as data curation practices. Work with the Head, Research Support (Scholarly Communication and Data) and members of the department to develop, maintain, and evaluate policies and workflows required for the effective delivery of data services. Work with Library colleagues to participate in the ongoing assessment of services within the division. Develop and maintain current awareness of, and apply relevant developments and knowledge in, areas of responsibility. Carry out responsibilities in a team environment and under the responsibility of the Head, Research Support (Scholarly Communication and Data). Perform other related duties as assigned by the Head, Research Support (Scholarly Communication and Data).Terms: Preliminary appointment leading to continuing appointment.Wage: Rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.   • Effective oral and written communication skills in both French and English.
  • Experience in the provision of data services in an academic setting.
  • Knowledge of metadata standards related to the organization and discovery of data resources, such as Dublin Core, DDI, and RDF.
  • Knowledge of data resources, services, and formats for which the Library provides support, and experience with data analysis tools, such as SPSS, SAS, Stata, R/RStudio, and Python.
  • Experience in the areas of teaching and research support.
  • Awareness of research data management services, best practices, and relevant infrastructure such as the Borealis / Dataverse, DMP Assistant, and the Digital Research Alliance of Canada.
  • Collaborative, flexible, and collegial, with the ability to work in a team environment.
  • Problem solving and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to identify areas of opportunity and experience planning and implementing projects and services that are responsive to user needs.
